I ATTENDED A CHARLES RICHARD LESTER THEREMIN PERFORMANCE!!
Okay, so I admit that instead of attending the St. Louis convention I was in Los Angeles where my daughter was entertaining me for Father's Day. Well, on a lark, we decided to crash the service at Faith Lutheran Church where Charles Richard Lester is the Director of Music. Not only were we treated to Charles' organ, the service included a Theremin performance by Charles! I whispered to my wife that my life was complete. Did y'all know that Charles played the theremin for the sound track of the recently released Spielberg animation, Monster House? He did. Here is a link - scroll down and you can see Charles and the theremin as well as a pic of us horsing around with a vintage Canadian Electrolux:

Well Mr. Goodall, Thanks for the kind words and the photo ... but can we say "Reality Check" ...! Looks like I've put a few lbs back on -- which is a shock because the scales aren't telling me that! Or maybe it's just the white jeans?! Any way you look at it, I am a lot bigger than I thot I was, so guess it's time to redouble my efforts and get back to the business of exercising ... if only it wasn't sooo hot here in L.A.........?! How depressing!!

I have always loved those Theremin passages in the Beach Boys' songs. Do you have any info about the organ? Did it speak into the front of the church or the rear gallery? Was the voicing more German Baroque or French Romantic or a skillful blending as in an Aeolian Skinner? Did you get to hear it played LOUD?

I'm glad that you had a happy Father's Day with your family. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Tom

Tom's Qs

Apart from the possible double entendres in your query, most of your questions may be answered by clicking on the link that accompanies this post. Scroll down on that first page for a whole section on organ details.

...and reference Glenn's link to the 94 movie Theremin:An Electronic Odyssey - This is a 'must see/hear' for anyone adding to this thread. Just the Brian Wilson (what a trip!) interview is worth the price of the DVD.

We have fun, but know that in the theremin business, Charles Richard Lester is world class. Some people's use the theremin is limited to sci-fi sounds. Charles is so far beyond that - virtuoso is the word that I believe is used. The piece he played on June 18 was Largo from Xerxes - W.A. Handel

Very cool that you experienced it firsthand!!! I've listened to Mr. Lester's theremin works on his site and I have to say they're very impressive.

In fact, the whole site is great, everything from the Pekes to the vacs! In fact, I have been reading his site since 2000, way before I stumbled upon the club if you can believe that!

I built a vacuum-tube theremin back in high school electronics class. After seeing this thread, I'm gonna hafta dig that thing out of the attic and get it going again!

That's totally neat. I'd love to watch a skilled Theremin player in action live!

Charles on DVD??

Steven,
Maybe Mr. Lester can be talked into getting a movie camera out and doing a performance that we could distribute.

I think it is "way cool" that you were working on a kit in high school. Be sure to share pictures.

I planted a dozen hints that the Theremin:An Electric Odyssey DVD would be a good birthday present. I should know by the weekend if any took root.

cybrvanr's theremin

Steve, I would LOVE to see photos of your theremin. So DO please dig it out!!

Y'all can hear a few of my theremin musings on the link below, and if you go see the just-released Spielberg film MONSTER HOUSE, you can hear some more! I performed on the theremin for the soundtrack. It's a very fun movie, and, guess what ....... there's even a VACUUM CLEANER sighting in it!! Be sure to find the film in 3D -- the listing will state "MONSTER HOUSE IN DIGITAL 3D" -- it's much more fun that way!
