Spurned lover plows vehicle into Castro Valley duplex, injuring six

By Kim Santos
The Daily Review

CASTRO VALLEY — Six people were injured Monday when a 19-year-old Pittsburg man drove his car into a duplex during a lovers' spat over personal property, authorities said.

One woman suffered a broken neck and remains hospitalized, authorities said. The other five people — including a man who suffered "major leg injuries" — were treated and released.

The incident began shortly before 7:30 p.m., when the driver arrived outside his 20-year-old boyfriend's home on the 2200 block of Regent Way demanding the return of an expensive cell phone and diamond ring, which he had given as gifts, Alameda County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Dudek said.

When the boyfriend refused to return the items, the driver got back into his black Ford Fusion. The driver plowed into the boyfriend, pinning his legs and breaking a gas main, Dudek said. The boyfriend suffered major leg injuries but no broken bones, he added.

The driver, whose name has not been released, then headed down the 50-foot driveway toward the boyfriend's half of the duplex. A 20-year-old woman who lives there was in the driveway with her 18-month-old son when she saw the car approaching.

"She scoops him up and takes the brunt of the collision," Dudek said. The woman suffered a broken neck, while the child received minor bumps and bruises.

The car then plowed into the living room, injuring the boyfriend's 47-year-old mother and 15-year-old brother and causing extensive structural damage. In addition, an 18-year-old female passenger in the car — a friend of the driver's — was injured when the air bags deployed, Dudek said.

Um, Actually...

...There's some progress here.

I'm referring to the fact that the story is reported so factually and objectively, with phrases like "his boyfriend" being used only to describe the relationship, with no sensationalism or moralising attached to them.

That said, it's sad when people can't just move on after a relationship goes sour.

Even sadder is what's considered "news" these days; sadder still are people who read this garbage.

Yes, when I first saw stories about this in the in local paper, it never said the two were of the same sex. Just that it was an argument of some sort and that a lot of people got hurt, some quite seriously, and a toddler almost got killed.

I think it would be a news story regardless of the sexual orientation of the participants. Adding to its newsworthiness is a spate of violent crime in Castro Valley of late, which has also been reported. It's basically a redneck bedroom community that is slowly waking up to life in modern times.

Whoa! My best friend lives in Castro Valley! It wasn't him though, he's not 19. I'll have to tell him I heard about that on here. That's just crazy. BUT, there have been PLENTY of hetero's that do some crazy stuff like that too, so this shouldn't be made a big deal just because it was a gay couple.

Yeah, the subject header about it being bad for gay marriage was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek; but I suppose some will try to use the story to show how horrible things happen if two guys sleep together.

And yes, the non-gay couples wind up doing even crazier things.

Most of the crime/violence related stories coming out of Castro Valley these days seem to be drug related. Makes me wonder if drug dealers have moved into town after being chased out of neighboring communities (like Oakland and Hayward) or if they've been there all along.
