Was at the warehouse last week and was going through a stack of 78's. I had NO idea this lady was still alive! (she is!) In the early days she had the look of Maria Callas. Her name? Yma Sumac! (that's Amy Camus spelled backwards) This is certainly a ''once in a lifetime'' voice! Take a look! Mark

Worth a look just for the pics . . .

www.yma-sumac.com

Actually Miss Sumac's name has been mentioned here on AW before, in a thread on '40s-'50s music. I believe it was RetroMom or Maytagmom who mentioned her appreciation of Sumac's voice . . . she has an incredible range and power to back it up.

I LOVE YMA!!

OMG Mark!! I've got that song "Copher (Mambo) on my Tiki Rhythms CD!! Hydralique is right Mark. We did mention Yma Sumac on a 40's-50's music thread. I cried with laughter when Frigilux said something about how some people felt her voice was like a knitting needle in the eye!! She really was fab though!!

I'm ready for the Tiki Rhythms and boat drinks now!!

The most recent time I heard Yma

was when I was visiting a Unitarian-Universalist church near Dayton Ohio.

It was some sort of "bring something meaningful" Sunday, and one of the older men played a Yma Sumac song on the church's sound system.

I'd forgotten this!

Thanks for the delightful memory, Mark!
