Are you stating that the filtering action of the GE is superior to the filtering action of a Whirlpool made machine with a real lint filter? With adequate detergent in the wash and fabric softener in the rinse followed by drying in a dryer, where real lint and hair removal can take place, I don't think cat hair should be a problem

Filter flo and cat hair

I have read here numerous times that the filter flo is the best, if not only, machine that can filter pet hair. As the proud owner of both several cats over the years and a Maytag 806, I can assure you that that is not the case. I have washed slipcovers where the cat sleeps regularly in the 806 at the large water level and the filter has been packed with hair.

I have always thought that filter flos simply generated more lint due to their vigorous wash action and hence more lint showed up in the filter pan.

Fabric softener and pods

Maybe you can supply a link to the articles you've read. I've never heard that liquid fabric softener can damage a washer especially since so many machines come with a softener dispenser. Maybe if you only use cold water the softener can build up and cause issues with mold?

I know that many people believe that repeated use of fabric softener can make fabrics, especially towels, less absorbent. I always felt that every time you wash a load it removes any traces of softener from the previous time it was washed.

Many people have stated that dryer sheets can coat the dryer sensors and also lead to problems with the dryer venting.

I don't like pods because they don't allow you to fine tune the detergent dose to the load. They are also much more expensive than liquids.

... but since the washer is on the second floor its not near the water heater so takes time for water to warm up ...
Run hot water at a bathroom sink or some other usage point near or past the washer to purge the line before starting the machine ... same as running water at a kitchen sink until it's hot before starting a dishwasher.
