Help Support :

KENNY!

Shame on you! I can't believe you said that! Hell they probably said the same thing about some of the washers that you can stick your finger in to keep them spinning with the lid up to watch. Stick your hand in there and lose a couple fingers! LOL

Gas fridges

My aunt and uncle in League City Texas used to have two gas fridges, back in the 1960's. I could never understand how they worked. How could something that burned natural gas,and had a burner, make food get cold?? It's been a mystery to me since I was a kid. Can anyone 'splain this to me?? (:
Thanks,
Rick

A summer cottage we used to own had a Servel Fridge-Had no problems with it-but was DIFfICULT to light its flame. We turned the flame off when the house was unoccupied-we shared it with another relative.Sometimes she would leave it running and we would have to replace the propane tank.It was surprizing how long it could run off the tank. The machine didn't have the icemaker-had to use ice trays.Don't know the fate of it-last time I used it was in the early 70's.The home was sold to someone else-a freind of a relative. It didn't have electricity. We electrified the place. In the shed-was an old pretty KEWL kereosene stove. The stove in the home ran off the propane. My mom used to use the Kerosene range as a little girl.

Gas Refrigeration

Any fans of Bob & Ray here? They did a bit with Mister Science explaining gas refrigeration. I was listening to it while I was doing Nordic Track and I started laughing so hard I nearly fell off and killed myself!
Didn't Whirlpool buy out Servel? I've seen an ad for a Whirlpool gas fridge from the 50's.

Tanks for 'splainin

Thanks for the link. So THATs how they work! Were these more popular in the southern states? I never saw any of these around Northern Indiana.
Thanks,
Rick

Rick,I'm sure there are still gas refrigerators around us,at lake cottages, hunting shacks,Amish country, etc. I've come across a few,but none in the last 10 years or so.

It was improper maintenance that they were worried about.Carbon monoxide poisining.

maitenance

Notice they didn't mention WHAT maintenance was so smart people who had a real need for them or didn't want to give them up would at least be able to operate them safely.

Did Whirlpool make all gas refrigerators sold in late 50&#39

The summer after high school graduation, I went to work on a street maintenance crew. In our breakroom sat a top freezer Norge gas refrigerator in white. I think maybe a 59 or 60 model. I had seen another just like it at someones home. Later that summer, it was replaced by a harvest gold Gibson. I even laid down on the floor and spotted the pilot light behind the front drop door. People would have thought I was nuts if they saw me do that, but they didn't. No interior light obviously and the icebox was as quiet as a mouse. This rejuvenated my interest in appliances. I went to every used furniture store looking at the old machines. Today all those stores are gone and the owners probably resting in peace. I have never seen another gas refrigerator since that summer in the early 70's
