Thread 80219 Is Doing Something Really Crazy. Take A Look.

OK, is thread 80219—about Louie’s Kenmore—doing something really weird once you scroll through Reply #1?

I’m using a 2018 iPad and about halfway through the photos in Reply 1, the posts begin to rapidly jump back and forth. This continues to happen all the way to the end of the thread, including the box used to create a new post.

This happening to anyone else? It’s been going on all day. I’ve checked it several times. I also cleared browsing history and rebooted the iPad, thinking that might help.

It looks normal on a Windows 10 desktop with Firefox or Edge.

Working fine with me. Desktop running latest macOS Mojave 10.14.6.

It's fine on MacOS 10.14.5 with Safari. I'm sure it has something to do with the embedded Flickr images though. It's better to stick with the aw.org image hosting anyway as you can be sure when someone wants to look at your thread in five years the images will still be there.

Freaky. I’m using Safari. Going to take a look at the thread on the MacBook Pro to see if it’s behaving normally on that.

Fired up the MacBook, and thread 80219 is behaving normally. It’s running MacOS Mojave 10.14.6.
The Safari version is 12.1.2.

Also: It’s the photos in Reply #1, not reply #2 as originally stated above, where the jumpiness begins. Have edited/corrected Reply #4 above.

I use the iPad 99% of the time, as it has a Logi keyboard/case, which makes it more like a very small laptop. It is a 6th generation iPad running iOS 12.4.

Just checked the referenced thread once again (on the iPad) and it’s still doing the weird jumping/flashing thing halfway into Reply #1.

If it has something to do with posting multiple photos via Flickr, why does the jumping continue to happen through all the posts that follow it? It’s a rapid alternating back and forth between the post and the one directly above it.

I’ve checked through some other threads where Louie uses Flickr and they behave normally.

Firefox, Win7 desktop, I see in Reply# 1 a full-body Flickr pic of the machine, then a truncated Flickr pic of something, then the rest of the Flickr pics (4) in the reply and on to end of the thread is normal.

The reason I use flickr is to conserve storage space on Automatic Washer's servers. Doing so helps keep costs down for our webmaster. I have a flickr Pro account, so as long as I keep paying, all the links to my images should be operational indefinitely. I have also been asking our webmaster to delete my old, dead threads to free up more server space.

 

Everyone, if you have old threads that have no chances of being revived in the future, perhaps you can consider having them deleted as well. Every little bit helps.

Server space is cheap.
The information members share is absolutely priceless.

I've found countless bits of helpful advice in comparatively ancient posts, and with the wide range of issues and situations people face with old machines, you really have no idea just what future generations will be searching for, or what they will find that was useless to you but invaluable to them. That history of knowledge is why sites like this have so much value over other sites (Facebook groups, etc).

For the discussions we have here, a lot of it isn't going out of date either- How to install a transmission seal, for example, is done basically the same today as it was 15 years ago, which is just the same as it was in 1965 when the machine was new. There really is no reason at all to delete your old threads.

As for Flickr and other image hosts, please don't do that either! I've been on far too many forums that have just been gutted of their history when web image hosts go under, get bought, or change their policies in ways that impact hosted images. Just looking at how broken the internet became after Photobucket changed their policies should be a big enough red flag for this.

You might think you're doing a good thing by indirectly paying your own part of the hosting bill. But in the end, you're only stacking the dominos so that if anything tragic ever happens to you, we lose both you AND the knowledge you've shared when your hosting accounts are closed for nonpayment. I've seen it before, and it's very tragic, especially when so many people have built a legacy on sharing so much with others.


Please consider instead a donation to help the server costs, rather than removing or offloading your valuable contributions!

Yep, can confirm, same story here. It's almost impossible to try to read the thread with the images jumping around. Happens on any Apple iPhone/iPad as far as I can tell, so that's a rather significant issue.

In actual viewing, the jumping is much more rapid. Everything after the first post is a jumping mess.

I should clarify.

 

 

I was referring to long dead threads that the original poster feels they have no technical/social value.  Many of my threads have become irrelevant and/or heavily damaged due to image loss. Some have been rebuilt, others have been deleted. I like to keep things tidy. Priceless threads, such as from redcarpetdrew's should always remain. BTW, anyone know what happened to RCD? Miss his posts mightily.

 

As for the jumping of the Whirlpool thread, has anyone contacted the webmaster? So odd that it only happens to a few people.

Display glitching

Probably some scaling issue...

My Surface devices have pretty odd ratios for the displays, connecting to an external display is kind of a fight...

My current mobile phone (Samsung A50) pulls the URL line and picture uploader into the text box and dosen't undo it unless I rotate my phone into landscape and back or proceed to the preview message site...

Yup.
I'm using an iPhone, and I can confirm that I too am seeing the "jumping mess".
I'm sure that anyone who understands techy things gets it, but I find it quite bizarre.
