Two days ago I finally started looking around for a new refrigerator. I decided I wanted a bottom freezer model, but was not crazy about the "French doors" most of them have now. Being my current (dying) side by side has ice & water in the door, it would be nice to keep that feature since I'm used to it. I discovered some the single door/bottom freezer models have water in the door, but none have ice. Not a big deal I suppose, but.... as I said, I'm used to having it.

I of course looked at the "French door" models too and (of course) like all the bells & whistles inside (compared to the single door models), but I just don't like the added price. Personally, I don't see the need for 2 doors for the fridge compartment, one is fine for me.

OK, so today after work, I go to a small but well known local chain here in California (Pacific Sales). They must be doing something right because this is the only place I've bought all major appliances and electronics for 15-20 years now! Anyway, I see a sales associate I know (friend of a friend) and we talk refrigerators.

After going back and forth on style and model, he checks the price on a 26 cu ft Samsung, bottom freezer, French door fridge in black, with water AND Ice in the door. Long story short (Too late! LOL), he took 17% off the price (normally the max is 10%). THEN.... after I'm at the cashier and they hand my credit card back to me, he runs up and takes the "work sheet" and heads off across the store, saying "Wait, I'll be right back". After a minute he returns and tells the cashier "I have a price match" which dropped it another $306, bringing the total savings to $653 (or 31%) OFF! I have to say, for this model refrigerator, with ice & water in the door, that is a SCREAMIN deal!

So yes, even though it is a French door model with all the bells & whistles, it's the same price as a smaller cu ft single door model with NO ice or water!! I think I can live with it!

They don't have it in stock, so I'll have it in 2 weeks. As long as I can keep my current fridge going for another 2 weeks with chewing gum and duct tape, I'll be good.

(Trivia tidbit. All of the current model GE bottom freezer models, are made by Samsung, for the last two years)

Better yet, the new frig will get a VERY careful evaluation during the upcoming wash in. And Kevin thought all the appliance oogling was happening in the garage... LOL!

Very nice machine at a very nice price...

I don't like the french doors model. Also, lot of those french doors model has these wide crisper drawer, that takes up 6" or so of head room for the shelves above.

I'm looking at the Maytag's single door.

~How does the ice get up to the top left door?

Probably a duct pushing cold air over/through the ice-maker with the residual effluent cooling the refrigerator (fresh-food) compartment.

How does the ice get up to the top left door?

This is the largest image I could find and I had to enlarge it, so please excuse if it looks a little pixelly.

There is a small enclosed compartment in the upper left corner of the "cold box" section and the ice maker is enclosed in. Cold freezer air is ducted to this compartment. Then like most ice dispenser systems, there is a seal between the ice compartment and the dispenser chute in the door.

However I must say I LOVE the suggestion of the monkey inside that carries the ice cubes up from the freezer! LOL

Mayguy: the crisper drawers in this model are smaller then some height wise, but are still large enough be useful! Plus you have to remember this is a 26 cu ft model... LARGE!

An ice shuffling monkey...

Damn, THAT'S funny! The sad thing is that it would be a more reliable system than most others...

I can see it now... "Hello, Pacific Sales? This is Kevin. I love the frig but there's just one issue. Bananas don't seem to last..."

Ice Storage

Saw a similar fridge in a friend's house on NYDay. The ice storage is very small. The tray would only fill the ice bucket up half way. I was not impressed with the ice storage.

The ice storage is very small..........

Yes I would have to agree... but honestly I doubt it would be a big issue for me. My current side by side has a HUGE ice cube storage and the ONLY time I've used all the ice was when brining a turkey, or filling an ice chest for a trip or party. If I think I'll need more ice, I'll start filling gallon sized ziplock bags.

I agree that the ice production and storage won't be an issue. I have never depleted the ice bin on our KA Architect series, even when hosting a party, so I suspect the Samsung's capacity will be sufficient for every day use.

Kevin, I think you're going get used to the french doors and ultimately be spoiled by them. There's something to be said for having the entire refrigerated section at eye level, and not having a super wide single door to contend with.

My only beef with french door fridges is that you have to make a conscious effort to close the doors. Due to the flapper mechanism those I've seen will not seal themselves shut without a bit of a push. I'm surprised they don't employ some kind of euro-hinge thing that pulls the door closed for that last inch or so where they hang up due to the flaps.

Kevin.

The the crsiper drawer I'm talking about it the "Wide n' Fresh" that Maytag use. It's under the two crisper drawer you find on most fridge.

My brother has that same fridge except in SS and they love it I want one too.I like the black so that would be the one that I get.

Amana

I have the Amana French Door refrigerator in black. I liked it better than the LG because it has a flip mullion that is seals against instead of two opposing gaskets on each door that seal together.

I have had it for about 6 years. Not problems whatsoever.

I would buy it again in a heartbeat.
