I've said it before, NG should never have been piped to residential structures. It's an unacceptable risk.

We knew the gas industry is smarmy but look at the sheer AMOUNT of lies and denials of truths they've been pushing. The gas industry has worked so hard to be so bad.

"2 million miles of pipes and gas lines" in the U.S. that's rusting and aging everyday...as we wait for the next explosion.

Yuck, I won't have any gas/propane appliances in my home.

Climate Town videos

I almost didn't watch this.... but got sucked into the video anyway. The rabbit hole then lead me to his also well done clip on how gas prices are set (published 5/31/2022), and spoiler alert - it isn't the executive branch of the US federal government.

A link may have been posted either here on AW a about a year or so ago, or somewhere else, on the dangers of cooking with natural gas and the health implications to ourselves and especially children. While my motivations to not use gas ranges predates learning about the health implications of using a natural gas cooktop, arming folks with this knowledge should be available to future buyers, just like those old yellow Energy Guide stickers from the late 70's/early 80's.

While I don't want to give up a gas dryer/furnace/water heater just yet, the long game for humanity should be to look for alternative ways to supply into the electrical grid to help people make the switch all across the board, including transportation devices. Or maybe the Midwesterner in me just wishes that for one day I could live in an area where rail transportation was common place.

I remember seeing an advertisement somewhere on YouTube where Dinah Shore talked about gas air conditioning along with gas heating.

Deadly gas stoves

My whole family has cooked on gas stoves forever. My great grandparents lived into their early 80's, grandparents into THEIR early 80's as well, Dad till 92, and Mom is gonna be 92 on the 28th. They cant be too bad for you. I'd worry more about second hand smoke from people over my gas stove.

Just because something doesn't kill a person doesn't mean it isn't potentially harmful.

I always like the concept of how people want gas stoves because it is "what the pros use", I always ask if their street car is shod with slick tires too, as that is what the "pros" drive on. Commercial vs residential applications are vastly different. Homeowners insurance should be higher if one has a gas stove due to the increased risk of kitchen fires. I have yet to see a home with a proper hood or fire suppression system over their gas stove.

I can't imagine settling for the lack of control, slowness and mess of the typical residential gas stove. Losing an effective self-cleaning oven is a non-starter too. Cost one way or the other is immaterial as I use very little energy for my cooking. Gas for drying clothing and heating water and air still makes sense at this time.

Of course it is a pointless argument as one will never convince anyone one way or the other, it is like religion. It is what one was brought up on and it is based more on beliefs and indoctrination than fact.

I’ve lived with and cooked on both gas and electric but mostly electric. II much prefer electric for the control, especially a lower temps, and its cleaner IMO. I can cook on gas, but just don’t like it as well.

If we had to move, any new home that didn’t have either an electric stove or the wiring for one I’d pass on it.

But to those that prefer gas, I completely understand and wouldn’t waste my breath trying to convince them otherwise. Your kitchen, your rules.

If the gas industry can put leverage on people to make a dangerous choice, we can certainly help educate people why electric is a better choice.

Some people just don't know any difference.

Fire suppression.....

I think all kitchens should have an ABC fire extinguisher handy. And not some tiny Walmart one made in Shanghai. You dont have to have a gas stove to have a fire. Careless people not paying attention to their cooking and starting a fire no matter what the stove runs on, fire from a gas leak, or an electrical short can all happen and if caught in time can be put out with a large extinguisher. Ive had one in my kitchen since I went on my own in every apartment I've rented. Luckily never had the need to use one.

"More people have been zapped by electricity" #obvious More homes have been blown to tiny bits by gas... In my life I have seen two electric elements fail, neither caused any issue.

Any yes you don't have to have a gas stove to have a kitchen fire, but having a direct flame present as an ignition source makes is SO much more likely.
