I like the POD Kenmore 500 set, it has everything you need at a great price. I wonder if it was a great seller. It's also a nice looking set.

Plain and simple, that is all you need if you think about it.. if I knew then what I know now about all these machines I would have bought a few sears models and left them in their box stored away... too complicated today with these new machines..I am a big Kenmore belt drive fan especially from the late60's early 70's.

IIRC, the maze filter was basically an upside down "bed of nails" filter. It was at the usual 5 o clock position, nice waterfall filter. If you cleaned them right away while wet no problem, flip it upside down and tap it on a hard surface. These machines were mostly always on sale, and well worth the price. alr

What year were these "500 series" W/D made? When these machines came out I think everyone in North GA (mainly Buford) bought these.
They looked like good laundry appliances. My parents like Hotpoint's. I always wanted Kenmores because I liked the way the control panel looked.

The 500 series machines in the ad are 1970 models. They were part of a long line of machines made into late 1973 which used this basic console platform from 1967 or so until '73.
As mentioned by others, these 1970 500 series machines were very popular and common. Probably on the lower end of Sears' "bread and butter" models (the ones they sell a lot of and make the most money) but as mentioned also, there wasn't much else a user needed. Decent capacity, great agitator, lint filter, two speeds, porcelain top and lid...they had the necessities covered.
Mark - If you'd care to see a few of Kenmore's maze filters, I can get you some pictures.

One of my aunts had that model washer, and one of my childhood friend's mother had the set. There were two others that I saw in people's houses as well. Definitely the most popular model in my experience.

Gordon--yes throw me a pic of the maze style filter. I am used to the WP brush that fit from the top, and the KM screen cartridge that fit from the side, but clueless on this one.

I agree, this set would really be all you'd need. Since they sold that well, maybe I'll find them someday.
Gordon--totally a side note on my 1960 WP Imperial Mark XII-----I'm over 90% on full speed wash and spin, but recenlty did some curtains on gentle----it switches one second before drain to high speed for the pumpout, then back to gentle for spin. I never knew. Was that common for WP/KM, or did lots of models just stay gentle for the entire cycle?

On the speed shift, I've never seen a KM/WP belt-drive yet that didn't switch back to normal speed for pump-out, and back to low again for the delicate cycle spin. I think a delicate speed pump out of a full tub would take too long. It may not clear out a self-cleaning lint filter very well either at that speed.
