Today's POD got me to wondering. What ever happened to Kalvinator? I am sure it was one of those that got sucked into another company, or just faded away. I just don't remember ever hearing of it's demise.

I remember my Grandmother having a Kelvy refrigerator when I was little. Boy that thing was loud. Grandma didn't mind though, she was profoundly deaf. Drove those of us who visited crazy though.

1941 Kelvinator fridge

was my only memory of this brand. My dear aunt and uncle bought it as a floor model 1n 1942 when my cousin was born and their ice-box sprung an irrepairable rust leak. Nothing else was available due to wartime production. It lasted until 1966!

I just love the POD's reference to "kiddie litter"! I've got to remember that one!

Electrolux

is the owner of the Kelvinator brand, along with Frigidaire, Gibson, Hamilton, Westinghouse and others. As far as I know, it is currently only being used on commercial refrigeration products in North America. However, it is still a widely sold brand of home appliance in other parts of the world, especially Australia.

The one in the POD is probably a Norge or Franklin made Kelvy. The "real" ones had the orbital action agi-ma-tator with Magic Minute action.

We had a Kelvinator refrigerator when I was growing up. It must have been made during the AMC years--there was a label that mentioned AMC and the Rambler. It was a model that had a freezer on the bottom. It seems like it wasn't too loud running. Of course, when it was running, we were too busy chasing after it so we could catch it and haul it back to the kitchen. (Yes, this is an old--and bad--joke. My very favorite kind!)

As far as I can remember, that refrigerator ran with no real trouble for about 30 years. The only repairs I can remember were a couple of door switches that turned the blower in the freezer off when the door opened.
