I just love these vintage owners manuals, Kenmore and Frigidaire specifically took a lot of time and had great illustrators working for them to produce these.

I can only imagine the time it took to write, proof, edit and print these things. They must have had full departments dedicated to writing this literature.

Thanks Robert - this is one great scan. I wish they would have kept the design of the fabric softner dispenser inside the pulsator throughout all their washer designs even with the 1/18's - anyone know why they GM stopped this design?

Hi Peter, I had a bunch of those dispensers and every single on leaked slightly during the wash cycle. I'm sure the redesign was done because of this design flaw in the internal dispenser.

Wow fabulous, I didn't know you had that washer variflexpghpa, its one of Frigidaire's nicest looking machines in my opinion.

I searched for "Liver" in the manual and you're right, it sounds horrible, I wonder what it was used for?

I finally tok the plunge and downloaded both this Frigidaire manual AND the GE brochure from yesterday.  WOW, Robert, I am very impressed, the quality is nothing short of amazing!

Cod Liver Oil

Was given to infants and children because of it's high vitamin A & D content. In particular for the latter as the "sunshine" vitamin was shown to prevent ricketts, a very common condition.

What people didn't know then was that most human beings (it varies by race) can produce all the vitamin D they need naturally by exposure to sunlight on a daily basis. Since well born Europeans and those who descended from such countries avoided historically avoided sun exposure for fear of darkening their "white" skin and resembling the labour classes, they were missing out on the important stuff.

OTHO it was very common from about the 1900's until WWII and afterwards one supposes for mothers to leave their infants out in their prams for some sunshine. You'd pass coffee shops, bars, shops, etc.. and see a row of prams with babies parked outside. Several years ago a woman tried that in NYC and was prompty arrested for child endangerment.

Thanks Mike and Launderess, all I've ever heard about cod liver oil is it tasted horrible.

And thank you Kevin I'm glad you like them. I have no idea what is going to happen to these documents, but I hope they last for generations.

For those who downloaded this Frigidaire manual, if you look starting on page 7 with the heading "put in clothes" (that's always an important step to have in a washing machine's operating instructions lol), you can see where I cut the letters out to create the "Daily Doctrine" logo, it was from this manual. Ugh and you should see the 1958 thru 1961 manuals, and the bottom of the line model manuals too, I have quite a few of them and many will show up in the coming year.

Dueling Doctrines

In the Gospels of Suds-Return, Frigidaire suggests that you may add additional detergent if you so desire, while the Kenmore Doctrine instructs you to add half the amount of detergent to each additional load.

 

This is interesting because the Frigidaire suds water is diluted by half because of the 2 minute overflow before the spin, while the undiluted Kenmore liquors remain pristine. If any suds needed a boost it would be the Frigi's.

 

This will all be a lot of fun as the Doctrinal Scrolls unroll. For practical use, at least in this laundry, only clean suds water is saved, and I rarely add additional detergent. When saving Frigi suds, I abort the first overflow before the wash spin. Always.

Design change reason

I Had Talked To Someone Recently At A Part Company Any He Use To Work For One Of The Gm Frigidaire Parts Distributing Companys Or Something Like That And He Told Me The Reason Why The Agitator Was Changed Because It Would Of Costed To Much Money To Remake That Die And He Believes The Old Dies Were No Good So They Were Thrown Out.
