Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

It is a grand looking style, especially when you consider how absof**kingloutely UGLY some of the low end control panels were in GE's laundry line after they went to the slanted control panel design. Either the washer or the dryer like this is in our warehouse.

T O L 1965 GE WASHER & DRYER

Yes Tom & Tom I agree this was GEs best styling effort ever in washers&dryers. I have both the washer & dryer and they both work they will be on hooked up and on display @ the warehouse. I even converted the dryer to 208 volts when I rebuilt it last year so it would dry at the full speed it was designed to work at on the three phase 208 volt power we have @ the warehouse. One of the interesting features the washer has is that was one of very few GEs that has a FOUR SPEED clutch it can agitate @ four different speeds. GE also made a few models later that had a toggle switch for three different speeds but this is the only four speed machine I ever saw.

4-speed models

The machines you described sound absolutely breathtaking and of course very rare. I was so very lucky to find a 3-speed set with a working clutch (thanks to a wonderful member on here!). I was certain to video various things of that machine as long as it continued to work in ever aspect. I really hope you guys do the same with the 4-speed machine because I'd love to see!

GE FOUR SPEED WASHER

I will try to get a picture of the washer and dryer when I can get to these machines again I have moved a lot machines around due to remolding of the warehouse. The interesting thing about the three & four speed clutch is that they are the same. The 3 speed clutch on your machine will operate at four different speeds GE just chose not to due this maybe because other TOL brands also only had 3 speeds?. Jon your clutch has two solenoids on it if none are energized you get full speed [100 SPM agitation] if both are energized you get the lowest speed [ 50 SPM ] by energizing one or the other you get either [80 or 60 SPM ]. Regular two speed machines give you either 100 SPM or 60 SPM I am not sure what other speed your 3 speed machine provides. If you want to see the machine run you may have to come to the 2011 wash in date to be announced later. If you are visiting the Washington DC area we may be able to arrange a tour. Jon maybe you could check what the two lower speeds are on your machine are and let me know I would be interested to know thanks John.

3-speeds

I've been working extensively on my clutch because it is so hard to get adjusted just right so that it engages the correct speed and is quiet. I've been experimenting with different types of rubber/plastic tips for the sodenoids. The original soft rubber tips had rotted and came off. What I can tell you is your 4th speed is the slowest of the ones you've described. The toggles will only energize 1 solenoid at a time, never both. I suppose one time I will do both just to see what the 4th speed is like. Definitely will be a handwash speed because 50 OPM would be really slow.

Anyways, awesome machines and a lot of fun when they work!
