I remember the coin op laundries around Knoxville in the past and remeber the same type of big dryers like this POD has - some all the same color some different like the photo. The LOL part is that none of them looked that good building wise and I never saw women dressed like that to do laundry and I couldn't describe what I saw in this forum related to womens dress - probably be better in one of the secure forums - believe me it wasn't a pretty sight at times!

I do remember the rows of Maytag or SpeedQueen top loaders, Bendix front loaders in various sizes and a row of dry cleaning machines but don't remeber the brand - was not the ones in this POD photo.

Coward here.

I'm so glad you said it first! My Mother's business was doing illustrations of people just like the women in this ad--I remember them well. But this ad is less than honest (OMG!!! Dishonest advertising!!!?!) or is depicting a part of Southern California that was taken over by some cult. I'm so thinking of the guys from "South Park".

My second thought was, "Jeez, middle-classniks who are this well dressed and turned out at a Laundromat?!?!!?" "Maybe they're handing out free cartons of Lucky Strikes to the adults and candy cigarettes to the kids.

whirlpools...

..I remember in the apartment building we moved to in Bethesda, in june of 66- they were alternately white, & turquoise, 25 total, & the dryers looked like the ones in this pic- There is one Dry-cleaner that I know of, in an old Poly Cleaners on River Rd in Chevy Chase MD, by the 7-11- I don't see it running much, but it is still there- that one has the square window...My favorite machines were #9 & # 7....# 8 was not level, & I took great delight in washing a bathroom mat in it-

1980's laundromat

I remember the Laundromat in the town I grew up in well.

It had 2 bulkheads of washers. One of them had 8 topload Maytags and the other was 10 Wascomat w74 18# washer extractors.

Along the back wall were 2 w184 50# and 3 w124 30# Wascomats. I still to this day love the jet engine sound of those Wascomats winding up to extract. It ties with the Whirlpool woo-woo sound for my favorite noise made by a washer. The old Wascomats cleaned better than most anything I've seen too.

There were around 20 30# Huebesch dryers along the side wall.

In front there was a shirt pressing shop and drycleaning dropoff desk on one side and a sitting area with a sofa and TV and vending machines.

Our local laundry!

Well, we had two, one is still open, the one that is closed was one of the Norge laundrys with the big colored ball, the other one had, and still does have a hodge podge of stuff, some Norge front loaders that are ancient, a few Milnors, and a bunch of newer GE top loaders, when I was a kid they had Norges and solid tub Speed Queens, they still have one original Cissell dryer from around 57 or so vintage.
