Here is what happens, I think it's called the flush valve. It has a screw at the very top. I can hear a slight hissing noise as if there is some water still running in the tank, but you can only hear it if you put your ear close, so it is very slight. But if I simply press a little bit downward on the screw at the top of the flush valve, the hissing stops completely. The next time it's flushed, filled up and stop, you can hear the hissing again.

The valve isn't closing completely.  Adjust the screw ever so gently until the hissing stops.  The valve might be getting old or just getting a bit gunked up with sediment.  Sometimes it could be as simple as the water pressure is a little higher than usual.

A complete replacement valve is $8.99, my personal favorite it Fluidmaster, and it's a simple repair.  If you have the old float ball style you can sometimes bent the float to help with a more positive shut off, but it's rarely worth the trouble when modern replacements are so much better.

Henry - thanks :) - But I tried that and it didn't work. That had worked in the past but not this time. I tried it several times.

Matt -

Thanks. A while back I had thought something was leaking and had bought two toilet tank repair kits. Once I adjusted the screw it stopped leaking so I put the two tank kits away in case in needed them in the future.

I got them out today. One was a Korky waterwise fill valve & the other was a fluidmaster flush valve.

I didn't need the flush valve replaced, so I used the Korky waterwise fill valve.

I have never done anything like this before and I was nervous thinking I would do it wrong, but it works fine. The fill valve came with a chain that I don't really need. I hope it works; it seems to. I don't hear any leaks

Mark,

I know how you feel.  About 3 or 4 years after moving into our house the fill valve in our 1935 American Standard Modernus toilet went south.  Well, I really wanted to keep this toilet, so I fixed it myself with a Fluidmaster valve and it has been doing great ever since.  The valve that I installed in 2001 is at least the 3rd one in the life of this toilet.  Knock on wood that it will last for quite some time to come.  I also put 1 1/2 bricks in the tank to decrease water usage.

Mark --Not too much can go wrong replacing the fill valve - it's pretty straight forward as you found.  Usually at that point you have to replace the wall/floor valve that got stuck and the supply tube which used to be solid metal or plastic, and now are mostly flex lines with screw on connections.

Glad it all worked out...

If you are not sure if your toilet is leaking you can put some food dye in the tank and a few hours later come back and look in the bowl. If you see food colored water in there, your tank is leaking.

Korky, what an old brand that is! I haven't seen that name in toilet repair parts for years and years! I didn't even know they were still in business.

Well, I was wrong!

It was the flush valve that was leaking. It is a mansfield toilet that doesn't use a flapper or chain. The korky waterwise fill valve doesn't allow water to keep coming into toilet, so I noticed that the tank water level had gone down, that it was the flush valve. I had the new fluidmaster flush valve so I decided to try this project myself. I spent four hours only because after taking the tank completely off, I could NOT get the old flush valve to unscrew from the bottom for NOTHING! It was round in shape (not hex) so there was no tool I had to get a good grip on it and it would not budge. I finally cut it off which was a total pain. Had it not been for that, the entire process wouldn't have taken very long.

So NOW, I have a Korky fill valve and a fluidmaster flush valve. Both work great and no leaks.

And that black stuff that comes off the seals that are under water, what a mess!

Now - if only this day would be over without a tornado. I'm totally creeped out by the weather reports, especially since I do not have a basement.

Good job for being the first time.  The black yuk stuff is awful and nasty feeling.

yes the weather has been rough on folks this week.  I am just 30 SW of Cassville Missouri and about 80 miles SW of Branson.

We started out the day at 65 degrees and cold front has come through and now 52 and dropping and cold north wind.

Korky

Fluidmaster seems to have cornered the market on all things toilet tank-related, but if you want to find Korky, you need to visit the quirky -- Orchard Supply Hardware.  This store has a penchant for carrying off-brands that are not compatible with what you're trying to fix.  They carry Korky flappers as well as fill valves.  I ended up buying a Korky brand "silent" fill valve at OSH  for a toilet at our other house.

Sorry to hear the job wasn't as simple as on your average toilet, but your new valve is a major improvement over the old style long-armed float ball.
