Tonight I was down in the shed running a load in the DD Kenmore after I changed the drive coupler...went back into the house to grab the Gain and it smelled like BURNT VINTAGE RUBBER!

As it turned out, Mom decided to use the narrow-neck Silex, and instead of using the (safe) Cory burner, she used the "decorative" (after this it's really going to be decorative...LOL) Silex burner. She noticed it smelling like burnt rubber, and it turned out the gasket was melting and turning the coffee into sludge! Needless to say she got rid of the coffee quickly! For some reason she doesn't like these (although she uses a different term). I don't think they're that inconvenient; the only trick is to boil the water before mounting the brewing unit and constantly watch it. And those "decorative" burners are for display only!

Unfortunately, even though the brewing unit cleaned up, I don't think it can be used again. Oh well...there's still another glass narrow-neck Silex, and I'll be on the lookout for a replacement. I guess from now on the only one who will be brave enough to use the Silexes is the official Narrow-Neck fan, Yours Truly...;-)

My glass Silex's are just too precious to use, including the full black MIB hostess tray set. In fact hardly use any of my glass vac pots. Prefer the Sunbeam C50.

Silex glass pots can be very picky and just when you think you've got a coffee routine down pat, you hear a "crack" and the darn lower pot has cracked.

You should be able to get another gasket, but probably will have to purchase another pot to get it. One day when have some free time may start to look through my "stash". Bought tons of vac pots and their gadgets (like those round cloth covers that go over Silex strainers), when I was going through a vac pot phase. Really don't use the glass pots often and prolly should pass em along to those that do. And if I can make a nice profit while at it, then who could ask for anything more? It will go into my "V-Zug" fund.

Not really a disaster

Laundress:

My coffeemaker of choice is the C-50, especially since I am somewhat "brutish" in the kitchen. Not to worry....Austin found a website where I can order a new gasket. I guess I'm more "Betty Crocker" than "Mr. Coffee". ;-)
