Tonight I was down in the shed running a load in the DD Kenmore after I changed the drive coupler...went back into the house to grab the Gain and it smelled like BURNT VINTAGE RUBBER!
As it turned out, Mom decided to use the narrow-neck Silex, and instead of using the (safe) Cory burner, she used the "decorative" (after this it's really going to be decorative...LOL) Silex burner. She noticed it smelling like burnt rubber, and it turned out the gasket was melting and turning the coffee into sludge! Needless to say she got rid of the coffee quickly! For some reason she doesn't like these (although she uses a different term). I don't think they're that inconvenient; the only trick is to boil the water before mounting the brewing unit and constantly watch it. And those "decorative" burners are for display only!
Unfortunately, even though the brewing unit cleaned up, I don't think it can be used again. Oh well...there's still another glass narrow-neck Silex, and I'll be on the lookout for a replacement. I guess from now on the only one who will be brave enough to use the Silexes is the official Narrow-Neck fan, Yours Truly...;-)
