Tranny leak

Greetings all,

I have a 1979 KM Heavy Duty 72433800 washer that I've had since new. It's a fairly basic 2 speed machine. Have never had any problems with it except for an oil leak which has been occurring for years. Not a huge pool on the floor, mind, but enough to cause concern. I'm new here so please forgive me for asking a question you've probably heard umpteen times before: Is re-sealing the tranny beyond the scope of the average DIYer like myself? Sure would like to stop the old girl's "bleeding" if I could before she dries up and breaks down! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Not a real difficult task, but can be spendy. The reason the trans leaks is water leaking past the upper agitator shaft seal probably due to a worn bearing in the spin tube. The trans and spin assembly will have to be taken out for rebuilding/replacement. See link for Roberts restoration of 57 lady Kenmore. Should very similar process

Think I'll just replace the washer when she finally conks out. Not too keen on the new models, though, so hopefully it won't happen for a few more years.
