Trash Compactors

Why did the trash compactors go away? Why are they no longer popular?

Recycling made those go away for the most part-was harder to "recycle" items crushed together in a home compactor.Modern trash collection trucks crush trash to greater densities than a home compactor-and the truck can take on bulky waste like old couches and such.Recycling collection trucks have bins on them for the various items collected-some trucks have more than one compactor hopper to take on recycling.

Mine is used exclusively for cardboard and paper recycling. My complex has dumpsters so it's easy to just toss a bag when I leave

I'd have to second the notion that curbside recycling took away the need for a compactor. I guess it was in the mid-90s when my father asked me to remove the ol' Harvest Gold GE Compactall we had in the house when I was a brat. He said he just plain didn't use it any more because just about everything that once went in it was now picked up in the recycling bin. Dang, I wish I'd kept it, just 'cause it was a GE... LOL
