What a tribute to the BOL's. I'm actually liking that GE in Reply 4 because I appreciate a clean design(before Apple's foray into that expression). I know it's nice to have a door to access ice, water, etc. but only if it's
hidden til needed. Anyways....thanks for posting a P.O.V. seldom seen. Luckily the builder BOL's choices we
experienced were the bare minimums. Today's BOL ...would they hold up to the BOL's of say, the 50's, 60's?
Kinda doubt it.

"Today's BOL"...

actually we're very satisfied owners for 3 yrs now of a BOL GE d/w from 2010, as well as BOL Whirlpool washer 2009 and Roper dryer of 2011, all bought new, and all do a fine job when used properly. How long they will last is another story, but so far so good. We haven't even taken off the blue plastic film on the d/w or control panels of w & d so they will still look good when we go to sell the house in a year or 2.

Do prefer TOL vintage ranges though, even as the DD.

I would rank todays P.O.D. (11/25/2013) as a very worthy mention!

The ad for the bare-bones RCA Whirlpool one-knob top-loader, of which all that's needed is one for the matching DRYER!

Enough that you don't notice what it DOESN'T HAVE, but appreciate what it DOES have!

(Now if you only didn't need that SLOW SPEED for the wife's unmentionables!)

Forgot about the Mental Ward's Arts & Crafts room at the hospital that I used to work at!

The Kenmore electric range in there, that baked & didn't broil & had one knob for and the temperature probably didn't go much higher than 375-Degrees... (easily an '80's-'90's product, sans the 'Sears' moniker)

There were a lot of metal stampings inside the oven for where the upper broil element would go and where if there a light in the oven would be and even if it had an adjustable rack vs. the one shelf there were molded glides for (don't ask how I looked in there and saw all this and can remember ever detail, 10-20-yrs. later--I worked there, I was not a patient there--Honest!) and of course, 1 eight-inch eye, 3 six-inch eyes, on the surface--and WHITE!

It was probably used for making Shrinky Dinks...!

Re: (Whirlpool) Shameful Set!

I did see For Sale in a front yard, years back, a homely looking one knob-Kenmore washer most-likely resembling the one above, paired w/ a more filled-out K/M dryer (most-likely a still low-line, w/ Temp. and Start buttons, and the Temp. likely to be on the High Heat setting on the black control panel, and not the entire full-width door; so Reg. Cap.)...

Kind'a like my mom, long ago, having her basic 1-speed Maytag washer (w/ Temp. & W/L controls, & white knob, only available in a white cabinet) paired w/ the more Deluxe, but white M/T dryer... (Shiny silver knob and Two Temp selector buttons)

70's washer

Thanks ovrphil... I appreciate sending me that.. I just sent them an E-mail to see if they knew the age or could get the model #.. I'm looking for something from late 73 to early 77..... Thanks Jim

Southbend craigslist

Even though they are a bit newer... I am always interested in WP beltdrives... How do you find these.. I look on craiglist, Ebay but never have any luck locating any.. think I will start sending you a message to see what you find..... thanks I appreciate it.... I am going to E-mail this person also.... my sister at some point is going to need a new washer and dryer... her's is whirlpool TOL 91 DD.... still going strong after 3 kids.. other than agitator dogs and a coupling... never had a problem yet, but the cabinet is starting to rust.. so I would have time to rebuild these and give them to her at some point..thanks again.... Hate to see these go into the landfill... Jim

Mid 70s Whirlpool

I would say that washer is from 1977. Looks lower MOL to me.
The Whirlpool set after it is early 80s (81/82) and is higher MOL.

Both are nice finds.

Mid 70's whirlpool

Thanks 70series I have an LDA9800 and an LDI9801 pair... Gordon told me the baseplate for mine was produced from mid 73 to early or mid 77.. that's why I'm looking for a machine from that time period, I would like a spare baseplate that would fit my LDA 9800 washer.. Thanks again for the info...Jim

arris,

The machine in Reply #66 is an LFA series, which is what followed your LDA.  It may be an LFA-5500 ... not fully BOL, it it 2-speed but appears to have only two water level selections, and appears to be standard capacity, not super capacity/18lb like your 9800.

Search techniques

Arris -

I normally use a few different ways to search, and TIME!

1) Easy - www.adhuntr.com (aka allofcraigs.com) or allofcraigslist.com(less helpful, as it brings up too many real estate offers with the word "vintage" in them)

2) More work - search CRAIGSLIST by city and randomly...more time consuming, but gives me results I don't find, with the search engine.

3)Sometimes - I may look at kijiji.com - (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kijiji, in case you're unfamiliar with it).

I search trying different terms - washer, washer dryer, washer and dryer, dryer, name brand alone, name brand plus the noun descriptor (refrigerator, stove), vintage stove, vintage refrigerator, vintage washer, vintage washer and dryer, antique washer, turquoise, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and other year representations.

So with Whirlpool, I just entered the name and let all the products show or use Whirlpool washer, Whirlpool dryer or Whirlpool washer & dryer...and I mean, I search using each one of those three search word clusters.

HINTS: CRAIGSLIST searching is easier if, after you enter the search term and hit search, you select on that page, "owner", "pic", and "title". (sometimes I try leaving "title" unchecked, as it gives extra results. Then I select newest and the low to high dollar sign symbol to yield the lowest priced units posted most recently.

NOTE: After I use the above search engines, then I use Craigslist and select "US Cities" at the bottom right. Though it's alot of work, randomnly trying different cities throughout the US is how I find many goodies.

My apologies if this is long-winded...hope it helps you and anyone who might like to find their dream stuff.
I spend about 1-2 hours searching, somedays - a few days, longer. Sometimes, things don't show up, even if you think you searched correctly. So the more ways you search for the same thing, the more likely a desired hit.

Hey Al,

You're welcome , and enjoy it while my obssessive/compulsive searching binges are in gear.
I'll pop in and out of aw.org, like others - for now, though - thank you.

Phil
