Ok, I admit it, I'm a laundry product junkee. Yes there is a monkey my back but I can quit anytime I want to see! Yeah,I have things under control, can stop anytime, cause I control my destiny.

Now,then!

Nabbed 14 of those little 110z boxes of the new Tide "Professional" line, stain remover/presoak. The idea behind this product is one is supposed to use it for reclaiming badly stained laundry, where stains did not shift the first time.

Now as many of us know, "pre-soaks" are nothing more than detergents, usually with enzymes and bleach added to help shift stains. This product is no different, as according to the MSDS it is the same as normal ultra Tide powder. However P&G claims this presoak is "HE/low foaming", which right there told me that this may be nothing more than Tide HE in disguise.

Used about a little less than 2 tablespoons to launder a load in the Miele this morning, and indeed there was little suds to start, but towards the end of the wash cycle the Miele was making noises that indicated it was starting to get foamy in there; so made mental note to stick to one tablespoon in future. Everything came out quite clean, even the cloth I use for cleaning gunk off my irons.

Now for the real skinny. This product smells to my nose exactly like or very similar to Tide HE. In fact when down at the shops later in the day, made a point to sniff a box of Tide HE to compare while the scent was fresh in my mind. The MSDS sheets for the Tide stain remover powder is quite similar to Tide HE, but the former contains carezyme, a special enzyme to "digest" cotton fuzz/pills and keep white cottons looking white, and colours bright. All Tide formulas which contain this enzyme have that little Cotton logo on the box. In fact all P&G detergents which contain carezyme have the Cotton Incorporated logo on the box. Did not check to see if Tide HE has that logo, am willing to bet that this Tide stain remover is nothing more than Tide HE "juiced up" or just repackaged. The copyright date listed on the box is for 2005, so the product is not totally new.

Cleaning wise like all Tide products, the stain remover does it's job, even when used as a detergent. Would not pay for this product as a separate item, as am quite sure any vareity of Tide would do the same thing. Scent wise, the product is kind of strong, but then again it is Tide. After laundry was dried, scent still remained but maybe am sensitive as used to unscented laundry products.

Now if you'll excuse me have to go and make room in my stash for the new arrivals, and the case of Persil Senstive that is arriving later this week. Hey! It was a deal, a bargin, begging me to have it! What could I do.. I don't have a problem!! Don't you look at me like that!

Thanks for the report, Launderess! Interesting product, but you're probably right---it's another type of Tide in different packaging.

I have several variations of Tide in the house at the moment, so I ran down to check for the 'cotton' logo. It's on all of them: powdered Tide HE, liquid Tide HE, powdered Tide Coldwater, liquid Tide Coldwater, and powdered Tide w/ Bleach.

I think Tide is the product to beat. I have Persil, Ariel, Ace, Viva and the above-mentioned Tide products and if push came to shove and I could have only one detergent, it would be a Tide product.

I just bought powdered Tide HE for the first time today and I think it cleans a little better (I'm talking stains) than the liquid version. Sudsing is very controlled during the wash portion of the cycle, but the rinses get pretty sudsy. Things were under control by the final rinse, but I still used a bit of liquid softener to ensure the suds were totally killed before the final spin.
