Hows this for fast: This started as a low in the Gulf. At 10am today it became a depression. At 1pm today it became a Tropical Storm. It now has 50mph winds with 65mph gusts and it is due to hit just west of me near Crystal Beach, which puts me on the bad side. Fortunately they do not predict anymore strengthening, but we might get up to 12 inches of rain.

Everyone in SE Texas and SW Louisiana take care. Be safe on the roads and watch for lightning, downed power lines, and tornados.

At least I now have a gas fridge if power goes out.
 
Im thinking of you

Keep an eye on it, 2 years ago on a Friday leaving work, everyone was like, See ya Monday. Katrina was thought to be much less of a storm and headed toward Florida. When I popped on the Weather channel the following evening. I watched the report like a deer in the headlights. We packed and left @ 3AM. The cone of error for the strike zone is a good tool, but that sneaky ole Mother Nature, can toss you a curve ball. I hope Humberto keeps trucking along fast for you, So he does not have time to strengthen, The Gulf water is HOT. This is nothing to play with. Best of luck to you 58LTD. alr2903.
 
Back during the California energy crisis in the summer of 2000, when we had rolling blackouts, I considered the idea of getting an emergency generator. However, I decided to delay the purchase because demand was driving prices skyward. Then I considered the fact that it would only be used maybe once every 10 years, if that. Maintenance, and fuel storage, were other concerns. I'm still thinking of getting one, so at least it could run the chest freezer and a fridge, and maybe keep the fish pond pump going as well. Speaking of wells, the well pump (used for irrigation only) runs on 220 volts, with a 3/4 HP motor. A good generator could run it, and it could come in case of major earthquake with disruption of water and power, and fire threatens.

For emergency cooking I have a propane covered grill with side burner, as well as plenty of charcoal for the wood grill, and a variety of camping stoves. The gas cooktop will work without power (if you light the burners). All the ovens, at present, are electric, unless you count the unconnected collection of vintage gas Wedgewood ranges in various states of disrepair, or the Modern Maid all-gas drop-in that is awaiting eventual installation on the patio.

I will be watching this all night in case things change. If you look at the radar loop, it seems obvious to me that this is going to hit further east than they are predicting. It may hit on top of me, which brings those 50mph winds here. Thats not really much, but it will bring down tree limbs and a few power lines.

As (bad) luck would have it, I installed my natural gas home generator a couple of weeks ago. I'm having trouble with it and have not tried to run the house yet. I'm sure it is just an adjustment, but I'm a bit out of my league so I called a professional. The frequency is off. It is supposed to be 60 Hz, but I get a reading of .45 to .50 KHz with my meter. An electrician who installs these generators for a living was scheduled to come today, but had to cancel due to the rain from Humberto. He is going to try to come on Friday.
 
We investigated an emergency natural gas generator recently. The cost was not that expensive, about $3K, with another $7-$800 for the additional wiring to isolate your house from the main line.
They even have dual fuel models (Gasoline/Natural Gas). We are still deciding.

I figured that Humberto wouldn't come to Houston, TS's and Hurricanes don't like to intercept cold fronts. And we have one hanging right over the coast. When these storms do encounter one of these fronts, they tend to ride along them (to the east)instead of crossing over the boundary line. I'm a litle north of Houston and we haven't received any wind or rain, and don't expect any from this storm. Plus we are on the west side or dry side of the storm.
 
3:15am - I'm checking radar. The eye is going to pass about 10-15 miles west of me. Humberto strengthened to a hurricane with 80mph winds.

The winds here are not that strong yet but it is really blowing and raining.
 
Generator

Of course we have a generator, we have been living in South Florida. We were without power for a month with Wilma. The house was a maze of extension cords, but we had light, bedroom AC and refrigeration. Our stove is electric but you can do practically everything in the microwave.
Next week we are moving to our house on Maine year round. The generator goes with us to power the furnace and other comforts if the power goes.
It is reliable, and easy to maintain.

Generator Move from FLA to ME

What a big move from Florida to Maine! Now you will be the first to see the sun rise as Eastport is the eastern most point in the USA. It will be quite the change in pace that's for sure. I have never been there, but I have been to Maine many times, and from what I have been told, Eastport is a painters paradise! Have a safe move.

I hope that you weathered the storm well and that no damage was done. Please let us know how you are doing when you can.
 
Power went out at 4:15am. No major damage to my house, just some tree limbs own and the purple martin house came down too. Power is on at my office so I'm at work now (yes! air conditioning!).

There is a house three doors down from me that is having a second story added. It was framed up, exterior walls covered (but not with final siding) and the roof has been finished. It came down completely in the storm, which tells me that it was improperly built - construction was far enough along that it should have withstood this storm. This is probably going to be the worst damage in our area, other than a few carports that came down.
 
Just Heavy Rains for Us

Well Thank God All We got are heavy rains so far, but it has been raing here now for a solid 3 weeks now, right now at 2:12PM the sun is coming out but We are due for rain thru Saturday

They are saying that the first wave of the storm is bearing down on Atlanta right now, with more to come in the next day or two... We are 16" under out average rainfall for the year, so everyone is hoping for lots of rain here!
 
Entergy says power will not be on until Tuesday - I think it will be sooner and they are just telling people that so they don't get their hopes up that power will be on in a day. The electrician is still coming tomorrow to service my generator, so hopefully I will have power from that tomorrow.

I'm not sure how strong the winds were here, but the eye with 85mph winds passed about 10 miles to the west.

The area around Beaumont/Port Arthur really got it good. As David pointed out, this turned into a Cat 1 hurricane really quickly and surprised everyone! All the forecasters were predicting it wasn't going to be a hurricane. They were predicting Houston all along and then when the storm didn't make a northerly turn, it surprised everyone. And all the people NE of High Island got caught with their pants down, so to speak. And to make it worse it came in the middle of the night. So a LOT of people went to bed thinking a minor league tropical storm would push through during the night and what actually happened was that they got a full blown hurricane!
 
Got my generator running - just needed an adjustment. I have no internet at home, so I'll be out of touch over the weekend.

I hope everyone else in the South where this storm headed is doing OK, I know flooding is a concern, but I've heard the rain is also needed in Miss. and Alabama.

The street lights have been on for an hour now, it is so dark outside from the very heavy clouds. The rain comes and goes, but the clouds are incredible! They just posted tornado warnings for the ATL area.
 
Well I'm happy now. Internet is back up and after installation of a hard start kit on my A/C, my generator can now run my central A/C as well as my fridges. The Servel gas fridge is working great too - I really need to restore that thing for future emergencies.

Utility power is still out to most of my area, but quite a few people got power today (not me). At current natural gas prices, my generator is going to cost $25.00 a day to run. Once the house is cool, I can turn it off at midnight and back on in the morning to save a little $$.
 
Glad everyone is ok

Just experienced some rain, more fell to the east and the south of my location. Seen lots of fallen cane to the east due to water and heard rice fields have damage to their "second" crop. Farmers have crop insurance for wind damage but not rain, go figure!
 
My power was restored yesterday at 5pm, so everything is back to normal now. I'm glad I invested in the generator, just wish I wouldn't have waited til the last minute to install it.
 
Glad your ok 58Limited and pretty much back to normal, looks like TS Ingrid has fizzled and turned to the north. Im hopin we all luck out this year. alr2903.
