Turquoise Kitchen and time warp basement in IOWA!

There are some VERY, VEEERRRY cool things to see in this mostly untouched home for sale in Iowa. The house is so cheap I would almost consider moving there just to have it. Fab turquoise metal cabinetry, slick patterned glass room dividers, pink Crane sinks/tub, some gorgeous black Moroccan tile and a basement you cannot believe. It's all a bit 50s novelty kitsch for my taste, but I'd be willing to live with it awhile….Collectors among us would have one heck of a party house here...

That is a very impressive Hotpoint Hallmark. I wonder if that is a pantry next to the refrigerator. That was a very modern kitchen design feature which came in various designs; some of which were recessed and pulled out to display racks of containers and canned goods.

 

The replacement dishwasher looks to be a Hotpoint so there must be a long-time Hotpoint dealer in the town.

Oldy enough,

I like the basement bath. There is some water damage to the rec room floor, and some black mold that needs attention.
The main floor needs re doing though. Even to make it proper mid century again.

Interesting House

I am going to guess that it was built around 1966 and while some of it is very nice a lot of it is ugly [ mostly basement and bathrooms ], just imagine how ugly all these kitchens from today with there granite counter tops and hardwood floors scratched dirty and dented SS appliances will look in 10-20 years, people will be ripping them out as fast as possible.

Hans I agree, I wouldn't change a thing.  Just have the "issues' fixed.  I love all the cabinet and counter space in the kitchen.  Love the master bath as well as the bath in the basement.

House is 1954 build

My suspicion is that at least the front 1/2 of the place was renovated in the early/mid 60s….I bet they gave it a pitched roof and added the huge front windows. Exterior elevation pics show what looks (to me, anyway) a remodel/grafting job. The place could be easily livable inside by deleting most of the wallpaper and some of the flooring choices. It does have an odd appeal to me. Totally in love with the basement bathroom…period 007 James bond drama! Here's the listing:

Age Of House For Sale

Hi Allen, do you know the age for sure, I was judging the age by the HotPoint Range but as you mentioned they could have remolded, the age the house should be easy to prove, it always amazes me that the listing of such an expensive purchase does not list the age it was built, The build date would be one of the first things I would want to know.

John, It's shown in the listing...

as 1954. Absolute proof would have to come from city/tax records…but looking at most of the exterior, 1954 is probably right.

I think you're right it does look like an addition or reno of some sort. Some rooms look like they may have forced air baseboard vents while the living room iirc looks like electric baseboard.

The house definitely has a quirky appeal. I like it. It needs a lot of work, such as replacing the floor coverings, getting rid of all that ugly wallpaper and addressing the mold/water issue in the basement. I like that front entryway, the glass partition is pretty neat, and the glass wall is very 60s I like it. I see mentioned it was built in '54 and I'd guess that addition and all the 60s decor was done around 1966-67. The other thing that needs a lot of work is outside, the front sidewalk to the door looks a bit out of shape, the pathway to the side door especially and that driveway needs a good pressure washing.
I think it would all clean up really nice though.

Looked at the basement pictures again-yep,sure enough mold on the upper part of the wallpaper-at first look thought it was part of the design.The carpet and cabinets on the end that are molded would have to be replaced.The black theme bathroom has to go.And those horrible shower doors-I would rip them out and put up a shower curtain rod.Much easier to deal with.I HATE cleaning shower doors!Would love to watch them get broken in the hopper of a trash truck!For its price--that house is a BARGAIN!!!!Less expensive than my area!

The basment needs love.. Get rid of the mold and clean everything up.. The bathroom with the pink fixtures is rough.. I'd find or have made cabinets to match, refinish the fixtures and get rid of the wallpaper and have a pink and white with checkerboard floor... Im not a fan of Turquoise either, but i'd take those cabinets down stairs... Have new handbuilt cabinets in and blam.. The floor coverings are mostly fine..That asbestos linoluem tile will out live cockaroaches....

I would keep the stove and in this case, i'd get a hidden control dishwasher to make it look like the modern one was hidden.. Then i'd find an old Reverse Rack Maytag and stick it in there..Something different but cool... Im not a KA fan... Just grew up with every one having one

Its better than the last house at least.. This i can mostly work with

What a weird mix of 60's and late 70's (the black bathrooms scream late 70's even early 80's Color Tile special). I love the kitchen and some of the light fixtures but a lot of it seems, well, disjointed.
