In the processor combine
1 cup flour
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup oil
2 Tablespoons light cream
Process just until combined. Roll or pat crust to fit a 9 inch pie pan and flute the edges.
5 large Golden delicious apples peeled and sliced
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup sour cream
2 eggs
2 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1.2 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
If you prefer a softer filling, saute or microwave the apples until they soften. Then combine with remaining ingredients and pour into crust lined pan.
In mixer or food processor (which ever is already dirty) combine
3/4 cup flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon ginger
Crumble together and sprinkle over top of apple filling. Bake one hour at 350. Cover pie with foil if it begins to brown too quickly
The one who can carry home 2 cups of coffee and a dozen bagels!
Bagels and cream cheese for breakfast is popular in the house. Audrey made a soft egg dough and shaped bagels, bialis and pretzels. Kailey who just turned 1 is in the background as an understudy. I saw her sawing a leg off Audrey's stool in hopes of getting the lead.
Audrey's dad's favorite pie is Pumpkin. I saw meaty shortening at Wal-Mart and bought a can to do comps with regualr after a previous pastry discussion.
The fluted edges look nice, keep the crust from shrinking into the pan, and made great side rails to hold more filling. It will take a while for Audrey's fingers to get a fat as grandpa's and make these honkin flutes.
I carried Audrey for the recoup period after my neck surgery. The tractioning was perfect for posture and pain management. When Kailey gets too wild and I can't chase her down while cooking, in she goes. We sang all the time when the kids were little and her I am crooning a toon to Kaiely who's about to wet her pants laughing at Gramps. Audrey called me gramma from the git go. She has three grammas but only one granpa. She calls me her "real gramma!"
Thank you, Lawrence. Children, at any age can be amazing if we just let them. My mantra is, "every age has a job discription." Expecting any child or person for that matter to perform beyond their age, exposure and experience can be hurtful. Teaching in an alternative high school, I ran into a lot of very little children with facial hair or expecting babies of their own. Every child needs a protector and advocate. Lordy look at us. We could have put therapy into a recession of it own had we all been supported as children.
Kids are so much fun. Both of mine love to help in the kitchen. When my son was little he used to follow me with his sister's toy vacuum when I vacuumed the house (I posted a pic back then). He told me the other day (he is 7 now) that he wants his own vacuum. I have an older Hoover Encore in the garage I am going to clean up and give it to him.
Kelly, It looks like you are having as much fun as the children and that is what it is all about!! How lucky they are to have you around them. I bet that you are the most popular grand-dad ever!!! Terry
