I know several members here have had good luck using u-ship to move appliances, but has anyone used their service to ship a car? For that matter, I know we have some auto enthusiasts on the list. Any shippers you'd recommend or avoid? -Cory

I have not used UShip to transport a car. But I have been very happy with the prices and service from Able Auto Transport (a broker to participating truckers, which is what most, but not all, auto transport companies do). They provide door-to-door service and very quick on line price quotes www.ableautotransport.com.

you can list your auto thru U-ship...by giving info of vehicle, and start and end locations, and dates needed...and then local guys will contact you with bids to transport your vehicle.....

variables can add or reduce your price for some.....if you need it right away could be one price, or wait a little while more, and if they can do a swap to take one car out for one person, and return with one for someone else, you could save up to almost half....

give it a shot....can't hurt to ask....

If You Want a Look.....

....At UShip from the inside, tune in to A&E and watch a few episodes of Shipping Wars, which uses UShip shippers for its reality cast.

It doesn't take long to see that the competence of the service you get depends a lot on good luck - while most things make it to their destination more or less okay, UShip's "lowest bidder" philosophy means the cheapest shipper gets the job, even when viewers can plainly see that another shipper might have better equipment, experience, etc.

Shipping Wars is a real eye-opener about what happens to large items during transport. Sometimes shippers overcome problems brilliantly. Sometimes things don't turn out quite so well.

U-Ship

While not for autos but have used U-Ship in the past am here to tell you one has to vet whomever is chosen carefully.

Other than feedback/recommendations from previous users you really have no idea about a particular U-Shipper. In reality anyone with access to a truck or similar vehicle can submit a bid, however that does not translate into having shipping/transport experience.

If the item is of value and or something you truly care about sometimes the best option is to go with an established service like Home Direct or Craters and Freighters. For added security pay with Amex or a "gold" level CC. These charge/credit cards normally have robust resolution services that can add extra protection in case things go wrong.

All this being said both my Whirlpool compact washer and Frigidare ironer came via U-Ship. However neither travelled great distances; one from New Jersey the other upstate New York. The ironer was transported on one side which caused gear oil to leak. This probably was my own fault for not stating the thing shouldn't be shifted so, but did specify "pallet" service.

Inquiring minds....

Kenny, I'll post a couple pics once it arrives, don't want to jinx it! : )

I'm finding the days of shipping a car for $500 are long gone. Still working out the details...
