How does the scam work?

As far as I can tell, the scam works by preying on the honesty of the gullible.

He sends you a check for $10,000 for furniture and rent. Says to send him a check back for any difference. You cash his check for $10,000, and send him back a check for a few thou.

Your check clears (or course) but his bounces as if it were a superball dropped off the Empire State. You have no recourse - you're out the few thou you sent him in good faith.

Believe it or not, people actually get taken by scams like this. Usually it's some sort of windfall he wants to share with you...

All sounds very familiar!! I had a Russian guy bombard me with emails eventually telling me he loved me and that I wasn't to talk to or meet other men!! Yaah right, like that is going to happen! Ghana is another country that seems to generate a similar load of 'affection' but at the end of the day it is all a huge scam.

Shame about the Russian guy though, he was very cute ;-)

Sounds like a variation of the "Russian Mail Order Bride" scam.

There are scammers everywhere. My nephew (who isn't very bright btw) got caught up in the "You have $120,000 coming to you from the __________Lottery." All you have to do is send us $5,000 so we can make the arrangements for you and you will receive your money. The dumb-A$$ not only sent the money, but he borrowed it from some not very nice people so he could get the funds quickly. Needless to say, his money didn't come through, he was out the five grand, and the people he borrowed it from wants their interest. Did I mention he isn't very bright. Hell he didn't even spell his own tattoos correctly.
