UK: Ariel 2x concentrated liquid

Following the tip off from paulc in the Aldi thread, I popped into a Somerfield and found the new Ariel Concentrate.

First impressions - the bottle is awful, just the old Ariel Handwash bottle, with a bizarre shaped dosing ball! Odd to see one at all on a concentrate.

Smells and looks like regular Ariel, but thicker maybe. Seems to wash and rinse better than Persil S&M, just like regular P&G liquids.

It all seems a bit half-hearted from P&G though. Can't see this stuff being a threat to the Unilever products. (the Fairy Non-bio concentrate comes in a blue bottle)

I've found Persil S&M rinses really well compared to the standard P&G liquids. They seem to be very sudsy.

Old Persil Liquigel was a total nightmare!

New Lenor too

Got myself a bottle each of the 4 New Lenors today. Black, Dark Red, Blue and Purple. Quite like them all but yet to use them. Hope they dont leave that awful greasy film regular Lenor leaves on textiles and I hope the scent lasts longer than Comfort as thats what lets Lenor down. Not so keen on liquid detergent so wont be using my Ariel 2X any time soon. Might see how it fares next time Paul and myself get the Electron out. Rob

Lenor "Crushed Silk & Jasmine" variant...

...is according to Tesco, being discontinued (by P&G). In its place is to be a "Ruby" version (or some such name).

Typical! I finally find a fragrance I can stand, then they go and stop producing it! ARRRGH!!!

Northernmary: They have Colour and Febreze versions of Ariel 2x. No Non-bio, but they do have Fairy instead. No Bold or Daz versions yet either.

I think the Lenor Infusions Ruby Jasmine is just the old Crushed Silk & Jasmine in new packaging with a higher price! They smell pretty much identical! I noticed too that the new Bold Infusions liquitabs range are also a higher price, £5.49 I think, and only come in packs of 9 or 18 istead of 10/20. The 10 wash boxes of powder are £2.99, so another price hike there too.

Having checked the P&G Science In The Box website, there are a couple of Daz 2x variants listed - regular and Citrus Blast. I guess this means if they're not in the shops already, they'll be appearing very soon.

compact detergents

I think its great that everything is getting smaller, its like the 80s and early 90's when we had Persil Micro Liquid, and Ariel Ultra and Ariel Futur, i wonder if powders will have a small scoop in them soon and shrink. maybe they will bring back ariel compact, daz compact and bold compact.

Dosing devices

Remember when they were called names, such as "Arielette" or the "Fairy Bubble"? Plastic balls by another name.

When Ariel 'Ultra' powder came out at first, it had a large plastic device, rather than the cloth bag/plastic frame thing that came later.

I personally liked the rubberised dosing balls from Lever, the type used for Radion 'Micro' powder, as they made far less noise than other and later versions.

I also remember a 1986/87 tv advert for Boddington's beer, where it showed an odd device on screen and called it the "Boddlette". This was the widget thing in the bottom of the beer can that was supposed to give a draught beer effect (foam) when pouring.

The "Arielator" is the one I remember.

The dosing balls are the thing that I don't like about liquids - they're so annoying clanging about in the drum - that's what's off-putting about the new P&G concentrates. I wonder why they aren't dosed via the drawer like all other concentrates?

I think its because the liquid can get wasted, if you have an old machine without an ecovalve. I am using persil small and mighty biological, and i wait till the main fill on my zanussi before i pour the detergent into the drawer, as if i pour it in before, it will just disappear down the drain. I like the ball system as it "Cleans the the Heart of the wash"

I love pouring liquid on stains, my mum used to use ariel liquid when in the late 80s when i was born and she used to pour the liquid on the stain and fill the ball up and place it on top of the clothes in the machine

its wierd how in the 80s they used to use about 180-200ml measures of detergent. and now they hae gone from 75ml to 35ml of the concentrated liquids

I still have a dosing ball which has a roller ball on it, they don't have them anymore

I don't really understand why you need the dispenser at all. You can just measure the liquid and pour it straight onto the laundry before you start the cycle. It's usually designed to be safe to pour straight onto fabric anyway so I don't really see the issue provided that you're starting the machine straight away.

The dosing balls were necessary for machines that were of the 1980's vintage, ie. no detergent-saving features, ecovalve, etc.

Remember also, that the dispensers' hose led straight down into the tub, unlike todays Hoovers/Candys, etc. where the hose is more 'J' shaped.

A straight hose would cause the detergent to trickle from the drawer, down into the tub, down into the sump where there was no water movement during the wash. So most of the detergent would have gone via the sump, should there be any delay in starting the machine.

Furthermore, some liquids are rather thin and start to run out of the drawer, before the drawer is closed. (My sister-in-law had a Hotpoint that leaked from the drawer area. It turned out that she used 'Ecover' liquid, poured it in via the drawer, and it trickled out before she had time to close the drawer. A waxy deposit built up over time in the recess and water eventually flooded out).

The dosing ball is less of an issue now that we have those liquitab things.

Forgot to add, that detergents sitting any length of time on the laundry can cause dyes to run.

Liquids V.s Liquitabs

Liquids are still more convenient, as you can pour liquid on the stain and scrunch it in. where as liquitabs are easy as you just chuck a pouch into the machine and off ya go with it.

I prefer liquids as you have flexibility in dosing and pre treatment of stains

Price!

Just thought I would give you guys the heads up on the prices that are "going on" with the new procter and gamble stuff that's on the market.

As I'm up north I took the opportunity to go to the local Morrison's Supermarket in a last ditch attempt to purchase the new P&G offerings as Asda and Tesco didn't have any.

Firstly, this New Lenor in the dark coloured bottles. £2 a throw! Bit steep I thought.

Secondly, the new 2x concentrated liquids. I've gone onto non-bio again for various reason's and I've paid £4.39 for a 20 wash bottle of Fairy 2x concentrated liquid!!! Yet Ariel "Power" is £2.50 a bottle.

Now is it me being tight fisted?!! £4.39 for a 20 wash bottle of liquid! I've bought it regardless because I wanted to try it and I need it anyway.

I haven't tried either yet but they better be good at that price. I'm tempted to shop around for this liquid though. Extortion!

I can confirm that the new 'Premium' Lenor range is overpriced: my local Somerfield is selling it at £2.18, I couldn't believe it! I honestly can't see many people paying that price.

Knowing my local Tesco, the products will be gone by the summer, due to poor sales.

I found another local store, selling the now discontinued Lenor variant that I like, at £1.19 a bottle.

Who the hell is kidding who???

I think the new Lenor is £1.98 in normal supermarkets, Sainsbury's have it on offer for £1.49 (or £2.69 for a 1.5L bottle - usual price £3.59!!) at the moment.

It's not worth it - and what exactly does a "black diamond" smell of?!

Fairy is now a premium P&G product, like the new Bold range (i.e. costs more, get less). Powders and tablets have gone up in price, Liquitabs have increased in price and now come in packs of 18 instead of 20. The regular liquid has shrunk from 1.5L to 1.37L bottles - same size bottle with less in it, and the price has gone up too. Not surprising the concentrate is so pricey.

A good way of pulling the wool over their usual customers' eyes when they casually throw some into their trolleys without checking the amount in the pack/bottle or checking the price on the shelf.

Hmmm! Very true indeed. I shall try it this once and then revert back to Ariel sensitive liquid or even Filetti liquid which is now a lot more reasonably priced that what it once was.

Well, one has to try these new gimmicks I suppose! I shall see what the Fairy is like at the weekend.

One good thing I suppose is that Fairy powder is the same price as it has been for a while.

I have the woolite all fabric one and its fantastic, i do all my topman cardigans in woolite on the wool cycle and they came out fantastic

i recommend this, i only use this on my delicates but everything else gets Persil Small & Mighty Biological

P&G Detergents

The Price of P&G detergents has been decided probably by P&G, all new products start off really expensive, then go down in price

I remember paying £4.50 for a box of Ariel Essential Tablets back in 1999, then gradually they came down in price.

I like Persil Small and Mighty, i got so many stains out with it, its very good on greasey food stains
