Yesterday at work I installed and played with a new LG machine. I forget the model number but it was a 7.5kg capacity, 1400 spin direct drive machine in white.

The machine seems to be in line with the cost of it (around £400) but I think for an extra £50 my money would have gone on the BOL Miele.

What I liked about it.....

- Good looks
- Excellent fascia / lighting / beeps hello and cuckoos when
finished!
- Wash distributes
- No motor noise during wash, really hear the washing
slapping about
- Excellent jetsystem
- Spins both ways!
- The first induction motor machine I ever saw which makes
jet engine noises (though fairly quiet ones)
- Very accurate countdown timer
- Big drum and easy loading
- Not too fussy about balancing
- The final spin ramp up goes to 1400 in one go slowly but surely - a nice sound effect.There are of course the usual piddly little spins before it does this.

What I didn't like about it...

- No fifty degrees! Aaargh!
- Cheap tacky dispenser drawer and `stuck on' LG logo.
- Didn't flush all detergent down (a pet hate)
- Low level rinses on cottons which go on too long
- Deep machine - couldn't push it back all the way - would
stick out in most kitchens I think
- 21 minutes to complete a final spin - machine gets up to top or almost top speed, then stops and does the whole think over again - pointless. And due to the motor having no friction from the belt or brushes it takes the machine ages to slow down from spin
- When the machine begins spinning with a slight imbalance there is an annoying slooshing sort of noise noise from the dispenser as the dispenser hose expands and contracts with the drum.
- There seems to be a slight fault with the electronics. As the tub empties, as soon as the pump is about to `suck air' the cold water feed is energised for about one second. I can't see why this would be so.....it's not to clear the pup of soap or anything because then you get the spin anyway..
- At a certain speed the machine vibrates as it picks up for spin. This is not due to the machine not being level or load imbalance - it jujst hits a frequency and vibrates for about 5 seconds. The spin picks up speed really slowly but smoothly.

Overall it seems a good machine for the money and I enjoyed using it but I wouldn't buy one.

This is marketed as a premium product and it's probably one of the next best things second to Miele, I can't think of a machine which would beat it to second place though the lack of a fifty wash really bugs me.

I would really LOVE it if someone (??) would write a similar list about a Miele. Surely there must be things one doesn't like about a Miele, even though they are IMO the best on the market.

Nice to hear about the LG - my grandma replaced her old Hotpoint Aquarius from 1993 (without my permission of course LOL) with a new LG, with the 2 displays and square buttons. Not talked to hear about it as I first saw it when she was holding my great grandad's wake last Friday and thought it would have been a bit inappropriate to ask.

Nick I'm interested to hear about the spinning in both ways - could you explain more? My auntie (my grandma's daughter) also has an LG which is probably about 2 or 3 years old now; and on the spin cycle on that the drum just continuously turns anti clockwise speeding up and then back down to a tumble then back up again never actually stopping the drum; just going in one continuous anti clockwise motion. Also interested to hear about the jetsystem - does it continuously recirculate or cycle on and off?

Also does it have the usual "you must wait 2 minutes after the machine has finished" door lock, or an electromagnetic one like the Zanussi's which goes "clack clack" and unlocks straightaway?

You wanted someone to listed likes and dislikes of Miele machines... would that someone be me by any chance? Lol.

That was great and as someone who bought my sister one of these for her wedding present I have been able to experiment with it myself.

I agree with all your comments, particulary the powder drawer which is cheap and nasty. These spin programmes take far too long. I think a slow spin is good but then no mucking about up to speed it should go.

I have a Miele Premier Novo bought in 99. It actually senses the size of load and changes the spin pulses accordingly. It's fascinating because you don't quite know what you will get. Would you like me to review it for you?

I would like to do a video of it and talk people through it but not sure a can with an old tape type camcorder.

Nick there is no fault with the electronics its pretty standard on most Lg models i've used for the cold water feed to be energised just as its emptied before spinning. Its to help any excess suds out of the way b4 spinning. some models do it more than others.

Pro's and cons of Miele

I've just upgraded from the 2515 standard control Miele (Gone to Michaels mothers), to the W2888 Navitronic, with all the bells and whistles. However other than the wackydoo display and the slightly quieter spin, I'd rather have the 2515 back again.

Pro's

- Good looks
- Excellent fascia / lighting, and menu system
- Finally can adjust machine settings without needing to do it by morse code
- Wash distributes can be good, but not always.
- No motor noise during wash, really hear the washing slapping about. Tumble pattern is much more variable than with the 2515. There is a much longer high speed tumble before it slows down.
- Hot and cold fill mixes to 40deg and then heats from there, shaving 10+ minutes off most cycles.
- Only hear suspension noise (And rattles) during spin
- Not even a Jet engine roar at 1800rpm, very quiet
- Very accurate countdown timer, if anything the finish time reduces.
- Doesnt put as much effort into balancing as the 2515 did. This is good and bad
- Machine ramps up to about 1200RPM and then for the final 2 minutes spins at 1400, or 1600 or 1800RPM or at any 50RPM increment inbetween.
- Temp can be selected at 5degC increments from 30deg up to 95.
- With load sensing, a full load can be done on a normal cottons 50 cycle in 36 minutes.
- Intensive cottons 50 only takes 1:26 instead of 1:56

Cons
- Machine is installed on wood floor and with both machines there has always been vibration. However the 2888 also rattles and at times vibrates that badly that the detergent boxes bounce around on top. Miele have been back and releveled, it is only marginally better.
- Machine takes longer than the 2515 to decide when its safe to open the door. It can be silent, but will take an extra 10 seconds to display finished and enable the door release.
- Motor and drum spinning noises have been replaced with shock absorber scweltch and annoying rattles.
- Machine doesnt distribute like 2515, it usually ends up with the heaviest item balled up on one side, before bursting into spin going OOB and then redistributing.
- Detergent/load sensor reports 100% capacity only when the machine is that stuffed that the door barely closes. This has been checked and is by design.

All in all I wouldnt bother buying another high end Miele again, the 2515 did everything it needed to, with no fuss or noise and is $1800AUD cheaper (List) than the 2888. If the machine doesnt settle down over the next few weeks, I'll be returning it for another 2515.
