UK Washer Dryer advice needed...

It looks like i'll be moving to the bright lights of London soon. Me and the other half are taking the big step and moving in together. Exciting stuff!!

Anyways, at the moment there is an Indesit WIXL 163 in the flat and although i've never really been a fan of Indesit machines i have been impressed with this one. It is on it's way out though, the bearings are going and so is the suspension, it's been there a few years and hasn't been looked after that well so when it does pack up i want to take the opportunity to get a new machine.

Space is at a minimum and so we've discussed getting a washer dryer, now washing machines i know lots about but washer dryers i'm not so good with. Lol. I know they're not *great* at drying but to be honest the dryer part wouldn't be used all the time.

Price range i'm looking at unfortunately, as much as i'd like it to, won't stretch to a Miele but i think with a little persuading i could get to the £700 mark, if not that then what would be a good mid-price washer dryer and what advice can you guys give me on them...perils and pitfalls and bonuses alike?

This particular model Indesit<span class="subheading-a"> PWDE8148S or W</span>, which is from their newer range, got a good review and put in a solid performance in the last Which? test of washer dryers. It rated 4* or better for:

 

- cotton wash

- evenness of drying

- drying programmes

- spin

- ease of use

- energy use

- water use (5*)

 

It was considered 'average' for rinse

 

The only slight negative is the 'easy care' programme which didn't rate well...not an issue in our house, I rarely use it

 

...and it can wash 8kg and dry 6kg....so if you 'almost fill it', you won't have to remove any washing prior to drying.

Given you've been happy with the current Indesit, it may be worth considering

I'd recommend you take a look at the Siemens/Bosch ranges, but watch out for loose worktops!

Our Siemens (the IQ300 one) is not bad at all at drying, the sensor is very accurate and the drying times are not too bad ether, the only down sides are the 2.5 KG drying capacity and it is a bit thirsty during drying which is worth considering if your new home has a water meter. Both the Bosch and Siemens air condensing washer dryers are Which best buys.

Thanks guys! I'm intrigued by the Indesit washer dryer, Ronhic. I had a look on the Comet website and read some reviews but people were giving things five stars because it got delivered on time, or they took the old machine away or because the machine has a 'time to end' display, there's no real mention of whether the machines are any good or not, lol

Go with the Indesit prime or hotpoint Aqualtis washer/dryer! If your able to reach the £700 mark i'd definately recommend an LG! If you can go for a machine with a larger drum your drying will be more effective.

I'd highly recommend the Prime/Aqualtis machines. I'm not at all an Indesit fan but I was very impressed with my friends Prime. Quiet, quick, washes and dries well and seems very well built

If I was at your place I would buy the one from my link, or exactly the same but with bigger capacity (9kg wash and 6kg dry), reviews are also good for this one

If you can reach something around 700, I found a 1400rpm 9wash 6dry LG for 650, which would also be a nice deal

Personally I dont like Indesit company, but remember, no matter what brand of WD you buy, look for big drums, because quality of drying is higher, quicker, and its more ergonomical and practical

I'd reccomend going for a indesit prime which seems to have good reviews and has a nice sized drum and has good programs etc or if you want something more higher end an LG 9kg + 6kg, I have an LG 9kg steam washing machine, the drum is huge at 69 litres, you can fit a lot into it, it's very quiet and has great functions

The Which score for the Hoover is 59% but I wouldn't recommend a Hoover/Candy WD.

The LG F1403RD gets 62% but a few Which customers have complained about breakdowns and slow repairs.

Another thing to consider is the Warranty, since your are essentially getting two appliances in one, it increases the risk of breakdowns, no matter how good/bad the brand is, so try to get one with a good parts and labour warranty as well.

I currently have a Hotpoint Aqualtis washing machine which is fantastic. Prior to that I had an LG F1402FDS6 which my ex partner kept when we split up. I could not fault it I loved it. Obviously these weren't washer/dryers but in experience of the machines quality and performance I was/am very pleased.

Many people aren't fond of washer/dryers and of course separates are always better. However i've always been fond of washer/dryers and had a few oldschool washer/dryers which obviously had smaller drums and still worked well, so if you get yourself a decent capacity machine you should be impressed!

Washer/Dryers

Well working in the electrical business for over 14 years i have to say that on the reliability of washer/dryers we have had our fair share of problems especially with Hotpoint/Indesit aquarius,aqualtis,advance & prime washer/dryers mostly the same fault. The fanned hot air outlet that blows the heat into the drum becomes unattached from the rubber door seal which ends up blowing the hot air onto the inside of the control panel circuit board which causes the board to fail by indicating flashing fault codes on the display. The most reliable machines we sell are Hoover/Candy washer/dryers. Don't think we have had one problem what so ever with them touch wood! Can't really say much about LG because we dont sell them.
