(Well, I am going to try this again. I just posted this a couple of minutes ago and for some reason it just disappeared.)

=======

Well, here's a photo that ought to make Hoover fanatics go beserk! Better have some tissues handy.......!

It shows the HOOVER DUSTER, one of the rarest of all Hoover vacuum cleaners, and the HOOVER MODEL 700, which is Stan Kann's all-time favorite Hoover machine!

I emailed the photo to Stan's friend Phil who has internet access, telling him when Stan sees the photo his head may well explode from the double whammy -- so Phil might want to have the smelling salts handy!!

The link below is to the web page where I found the photo:

btw, I do not have Tom Anderson's email address. I am sure he'd love to see this, so could someone send it along to him. THX

That is a model 200 Duster for 1930...not sure why there is a 543 upright there as that was from 1927-1929. This must have been taken in '29 as the last of the 543s were sold to make way for the 575s. Very cool photo though!! Thanks for posting it. What are the other items?

543 or 575

Another person, Bob Kautzman, has weighed in that this is a 575, not a 543. See the triangular medallion on top of the brush housing -- the 543 had a rectangular medallion according to him. He also said the model of Duster corresponds more to the vintage of the 575 than the 543.

Thr 575 was the economy version of the 700 and was out at the same time that the Duster was being sold. He also pointed out that there were a couple of variations on the Duster, one had an all-silver motor housing and one had the black housing like this one.

Very neat picture; I bet that Hoover Duster doesn't weigh anything...looks very lightweight!

And since you mentioned the 575, on a completely different note, wasn't there a Hoover produced around that time that used a flat belt instead of the usual round belt? What was the model number of that one? For some reason 425 comes to mind, but I'm probably wrong...

This is a 543! It has the oil cup on the top of the motor. This was the popular priced cleaner to the 700. It used the old 541 motor but used the 700 agitator. This new agitator was more than the older style motor could handle so the 700 motor (without the oil cup) was used on the 575. My 543 in my collection has the triangular nameplate in black with the same satin finish. This is definitely a 543. It is just a late one shown with the "new" duster.

Yes, there was a flat belt model 425 that came out in 1932 for Hoover's 25th silver jubilee, yes I know that they began in 1908 but they went by the patent date at this time. This flat belt was only used on this machine. It was replaced by the 450 that looked like a junior 800 in 1933 and it used a proper round belt.

um why??

Would Stan Kann be selling off stuff from his collection?

Hoover Dusters are RARE birds, only 9000 made.

Tom, myself, and Fred are lucky to have dusters in our collections!

543, 575 etc

Well, not being at all an expert on Hoovers, I defer to those who are. So I guess a 543 it is [the upright in the photo that started this thread].

I talked to Stan today and mentioned the Duster. He did not say why he is selling it. So I didn't think it was any of my business to ask. Sometimes people have to sell prized things when cash is tight. I've certainly had to to that more times than I like.

Now, I am NOT saying that that IS the case with him (although I doubt it) ... I am just saying that people do generally have good reasons for selling treasures and usually the tactful way to proceed is to not to ask them why.

I'd love to have a Duster, but the one I really want is the one that is all polished, with the 700/725 style motor, and a fancy on-off switch mounted on the motor housing instead of a cheesy add-on switch on the electric cord as the black version has.

It really is a cute little bugger isn't it.

Switch??

I've never seen of or known of one that has a fancier switch--other than the 'add-on' switch on the cord.

Tom? Jeff?

Duster...

These came with the switch in the cord...the "rotary" type switch is original but I have seen the rocker switch as a replacement. The Duster came with a painted motor cover like the 575...it was not polished like the 700 and did not use a motor like the 725. I sold Bob K. the extra one from my collection via ebay a few years back. Both of mine had the brown genuine Hoover replacement bags.
