Unusual Laundry Sink

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I too recall in the 50’s that most homes had cement laundry tubs, usually double sinks, but I don’t recall ever seeing any with built in washboards where I lived in Northern Calif. Maybe they were more prevalent on the East Coast. We used to call them laundry trays, why trays instead of tubs I don’t know. But they were handy if you were using a wringer washer to do the washing.

Probably by the 1950's

Wash boards surely were a novelty what with semi-automatic and or fully washing machines more common.

Sinks one saw were in homes far older than 1950's and again much of the laundry was done in those sinks/tubs by hand.

If am being honest owning and having used a washboard (glass) the things aren't exactly gentle on the washing. Nor one's knuckles or hands if not done properly either.

What one does mostly is use the wash board as a surface to lay things upon, then go at the badly soiled area with a laundry scrub brush.

I got a cheap Glacier Bay all-in-one version of the subject sink for the new laundry area in our basement.   I haven't used the washboard feature on it yet and probably won't ever use it much, but it saved me some time by eliminating the need to shop for sink and faucet (pull out type, which I learned to love in the laundry room at our previous house) separately.

My dad's aunt & uncle's house, which was built in 1936, had double concrete laundry tubs in the basement. I remember there were galvanized metal washboard inserts on the front (sloped) sections. I've also seen them on other freestanding laundry sinks. What is different about these is that they are a drop-in sink that goes into a countertop, which would look good in an extra nice laundry room, such as one that has cabinets that match those in the kitchen.
