Dad has a GE side by side with a water/ice dispenser. Unit is about eight years old. Water dispenser was not working (ice maker did work) and no noise was made when depressing the dispenser paddle. I assumed that perhaps the problem was a faulty water fill valve, which on his model is a double solenoid that cost me about $40 from RepairClinic.com.
When I went behind the fridge, the existing fill valve looked corroded and in poor shape. I added the new valve, but unfortunately the dispenser still did not work.
Dad called a repair store and the diagnosis was a frozen water line. He put all of his frozen food in the fridge, turned off the freezer control, opened the door and ran a fan. Within two hours his water line was running again and the dispenser works. Turns out it wasn't the water fill valve after all, but it looked so corroded back there, I'm glad that part was renewed so it's less likely to fail in the future.
