That thought crossed my mind, but there's really nothing truly offensive happening here, and Robert is on vacation anyway.

I'm going to start ignoring this thread in hopes that it will quickly slide off the board and into the virtual dust bin.

To support the site...

.... I have made some really good friends on this site as well as found a resource for a hobby that some might consider to be odd or unusual.

When I was a kid I wouldn't have dreamed of talking with someone about being gay because I thought I was the only person on earth who felt that way.  Finding this site was kind of the same thing.  When I would mention my hobby of vintage dishwashers they would kind of look a little funny and say "well that's interesting!".  So I guess finding AW.ORG was a second "Coming Out" for me.  LOL

With jvascrpt disabled for loadtime efficiency I didn't see ads anyway. But since OP mentioned it, I switched to paying user.

Some of you will recall my grumbling about this govt geezer poorhouse I moved to after every utility threatened to cut me off in my freemarket rentalry. But one thing it DOES do is leave me with some discretionary spending so I discretionarily spent some of it here. Surely I use a dollar a month of bandwidth, only fair that I pay since I can.

I bet you can too, T5. Discuss.

Well...

I don't know why, but it seems to me that every time the matter is mentioned, there is a sort of over-reaction.

Yes, maybe the original question was not expressed in the nicest possible form, but it seemed to me a legitimate question, and sometimes the replies have not been much nicer than the question.

The original question sounds to me like "What an upgraded memebership entails?". Shouldn't the answer be simply something like "Upgraded members make a small donation to support the website; they have access to two reserved forums and don't see the ads"? What's wrong with that?

What am I missing?

donprohel:

The poster's thread title was part of the problem: "Upgraded Membership no ads option = Pointless?"

Saying that "Upgraded equals pointless" was a bit uncool, particularly on someone's eleventh post.

If the member had asked "Can someone explain the point behind offering upgraded membership? Why do people here choose that option?" I think the outcome would have been different.

The little comment (since deleted by Robert) about the Netherlands didn't help. I think reaction to the OP has been pretty mild, with no personal attacks against the poster; people have simply outlined their reasons for choosing upgraded membership, and have also commented on what the poster said, which is vastly different than attacking the poster himself or herself.

@danemodsandy

I completely agree with you that «saying that "Upgraded equals pointless" [would be] a bit uncool», but instead I read the original post as "Doesn't it seem pointless to upgrade just not to see the ads?" which does not mean that upgrading is pointless, but that it WOULD SEEM pointless IF it were ONLY not to see the ads. This is also the content of the post which states "Why exactly do people pay to not see ads here on AW.org?" and please note that this is a question, not a statement.

Consider also that when the upgraded membership was introduced, it was first discussed in a thread, where the reasons were explained, and we agreed. Probably the original poster has never seen that thread, hence his request for clarifications.

Incidentally, being a non-native speaker as (I suppose) the original poster, I sympathize with him.

Finally, about his comment on the Netherlands, I have seen other members saying worse things about their own countries, and no one minded (me included): why in this case a relatively harmless comment (in my opinion, "not a real country" means just "a very small country that does not make the news") has been considered so offensive?[this post was last edited: 1/28/2014-08:00]

Netherland is just that, nether land. At high tide it scarcely exists at all. It's just 12 western European provinces and 3 Caribbean islands, without even saying which 3.

So it's an in-joke. A lot like the US constitution. I mean, there is some underlying formal structure but nobody really believes it or operates upon it.

It's like New Orleans, except with tulips.

Funny Rick, that you mention New Orleans. First thing after the flood was that Dutch engineers were invited to make a plan to prevent it happen again. We know a few things about living below sea level. At high tide life continues here just as well.

We also have the biggest port in Europe, it's the only one in the top ten of biggest ports that is not in Asia:

http://www.ship-technology.com/features/feature-the-worlds-10-biggest-ports/

And there is lots of other stuff to find about the Netherlands on the internet, including what islands belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It's just a Google search away! :-)

The original jibe about the Netherlands perplexed me. It may not be a physically large nation but there are plenty in the world that are smaller, and unlike many other small nations the Netherlands has both a unique language and culture of long standing. And of course anyone who knows anything about world history knows that, like England, the Netherlands has historically punched way, way above its weight class for centuries in terms of world influence.

Regarding the cost and benefits of membership, if only everything I purchased in life gave such value and enjoyment! For me deletion of advertisements is only part of the benefit, the other is Robert's splendid software. I regularly read several other forums and find that going from this to any other software (like V-Bulletin) is like going from a TOL machine to one with one speed and one cycle: it might get the job done but it's just no fun.

No I'm not going to delete this thread. It is an important discussion about why we have upgraded memberships and advertising on the site. This is the only way I can afford to run these sites anymore. Between 2001 and 2010 before any monetization was implemented into automaticwasher.org I spent over $6,000 (over 9 years) of my own money running the site and I did it with pleasure. Then due to increased membership and viewership the costs of resources continued to rise and I could no longer afford to do this, it was either come up with ways of raising money to pay for all this or close the sites. I decided it was worth the effort to figure out a way have the site pay for itself and under most circumstances it works now, but it's a delicate balance that could change at any time.

Yes the original poster was obnoxious in the way he presented the question, and yes that 'could' be misconstrued because of a language barrier that could have been fixed with a simply apology, but that has not happened, which makes the OP irrelevant now to this conversation.

As others above have mentioned

It's all part of the tweeting and texting noise.

I've certainly noticed in other forums an increase in these no thought given one-liners which ALWAYS end in the word "discuss"
After which you never hear from the OP again.

I generally ignore them

After You Donate, Consider....

Looking over Automatic Ephemera's yummalicious selection of brochures, owner's manuals, service manuals, parts lists and other goodies.

If you buy, those purchases also help a bit, and as Robert says, costs mean it's not easy to run a sprawling Website like this one.

Trust me, you do not want what we have now to go back to being a Yahoo! Group.

One thing's for sure:  It doesn't take much prodding for the AW family to jump to the defense of this website and its owner.  We may have the occasional internal disagreement or spat, but I'll be damned if some outsider is going to make disparaging comments about AW without rebuttal.

Why I pay

1. I love this site. Robert spends so much time to make this site wonderful, I'd gladly pay more.

2. Nothing is ever truly free, there are always costs and it's not fair to make Robert bear them all.

3. Quality costs.

If I there is anything I can do to keep this site as amazing as possible, I would, but the best I can do is contribute my membership.

Thanks

joe

Robert:

I am repeating myself, but before someone told me about this website I thought I was the only person that had an infatuation for anything vintage. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a member of this website and I appreciate you for the work it takes to keep it up and running. Thank you!

The hell are you even talking about? I don't use any social media except Youtube, and I only rarely upload something there.
@Unimatic: And why exactly is it offensive? I took it from a Gmod/TF2 video, no offense to the Dutchies intended :c

Cut the Attitude Now or else

Look T5-RSergeant, just because you see something in a cartoon is absolutely no excuse to repeat it in a public forum if some might find it offensive.

We have a good friend/highly respected member here on aw.org from the Netherlands and I found it highly offensive since it was posted in your location field, that field is meant for a city, state, country, not opinions of places.

Also the way you worded this topic was also in poor taste, at least to Americans and this is an American run site. You have two choices you can apologize to the membership here and we will forget this and start over, or you can leave, you choose.

I actually kind of ignored this thread because I didn't have a dog in this fight with nothing to contribute.
But now I want to offer this handy product to Robert and the others.
