Using Washer After 40 Years

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Here’s one misconception people have about things that are essentially new despite being decades old, you’ll have to lubricate and replace certain things even if they have little to no wear/use on them. Rubber seals and gaskets can dry out, oil can go missing in action despite sitting (mainly the wicking on the pump if it’s a 4 port pump), many other things.

With dryers, rollers and belts can develop flat spots which can cause a thump thump thump sound upon startup. Especially important to see what shape the blower belt is in on the pre 1966 Whirlpool dryers, those poly belts do no like to sit for many years that’s for sure. If the belt is stretched, it will hamper down the performance on those ‘61 through ‘65 Whirlpool dryers, it will for sure to cause the incoming air to scoot behind the drum and out the exhaust since the blower isn’t running up to speed.

Not trying to discourage anyone in any shape or form, but have seen similar things happen when people bought cars that were low mileage and overall in good shape. While there was little to no wear on the engine and transmission, all the bushings, brake hoses, various gaskets and rubber components on the carburetor, gaskets on the engine all had to be replaced from just age, not mileage.

John, I appreciate the advice. This is why I want to pull it out of service now. An ounce of prevention now is worth a pound of cure later so it's best to have someone qualified or who can teach me to keep this machine running at its optimum best.

It's the quietest Kenmore I ever heard. Though now that it is broken in a little, you can hear the self cleaning filter gurgling through the hose. It makes aweird kind of snorkeling sound I guess.

My 1978 A806/DE808 pair are still running fine. I got them from my boss in 1980 as he was given a new employee comp pair every 2 years.
I tore the A806 down about 5 years ago and replaced the damper pads. The pads were starting to shift on the base, other than a couple pair of belts that is all they have needed.
