Remember the Vacuum coffee pots of the 40's and 50's? These are the coffee makers with the top and bottom bowls. Sunbeam made an electric plug-in type that was metal, whle Cory and others, produced a glass stove top model that looked more like something from a chemical lab than a coffee maker. I always thought they were interesting when I was a child. As luck would have it, a few years ago, I spotted a glass vacuum maker in a kitchen specialties shop, manufactured by Bodum. I quickly snapped it up, more for a conversation piece than anything, but was pleasantly suprised by the delicious coffee it made.

Say YAY for Coffee Lovers!

Don't even get me started on coffee! IMHO vacuum coffeepots make the absolute best coffee! I have also been using a Bodum french press lately. It makes really good coffee, but you have to drink it really fast or have a low-heat burner to keep it warm.

Since I am dangerous with glass (and sharp knives), I prefer the Sunbeam C-50 to all coffeemakers. It's a rugged little booger and very easy to use!

Enjoy your vacuum coffee!

Sunbeam Coffee Maker

My parents bought one in 1959 and paid around $35.00 for it, which was a lot of mone back then. My mom still has it and it still works. The pot was not used on a daily basis. I picked one up on e-bay at a good price. I also got the creamer and sugar bowl that matches it. I collect coffee pots. I have a Bodum Santos, Corey electric vacumn with the glass bubble on top, three Silex/Corey glass pots that you would use on the stove top, a new Yama coffee maker (both top and bottom glass. I also got a Bodum electric pot on e-bay. I find that you can get really good deals on these types of coffee makers on e-bay.

Starbuck Barista Utopia

I had a Starbucks Barista Utopia vacuum pot which sadly kicked the bucket. I loved the coffee it made but it was under three years old when it quit. Since it was made by Bodum I am looking at their vacuum pots but am worried of its life expectancy - any thoughts.

I am also considering a french press as we usually only make it on the weekends and are not all day coffee drinkers so not having a warmer is ok, but having a bad cup of coffee is NOT ok.

Bodum vacuum coffee maker

Well I just ordered a new Bodum vacuum coffee maker and it was under $50.00 including shipping. The only thing is the color which is orange and does not go with my decor but at 50% less than the clear model I will take it. I have attached a link to it! (if the link does not work I found it at homeclick.com)

It will be interesting to see

what your impressions of that machine are 3 months down the road. I always hated Mr Coffee for killing Sunbeam Vacuum Coffemasters! That plastic they used got rank after a months use and there was no way to clean it out.

Bodum has used a plastic that is "supposed" to be impervious to coffee oils.

It will be interesting to see what you think.

I do like the AM timer feature so you can wake up to Vacuum coffee.
Uni has that feature on his 1949 Glass Silex, it starts early with an alarm that wakes ME up and gets ME going making HIS coffee!

I have to agree, that my Bodum vaccuum makes coffee that is superior to my Braun drip maker. Even guests have had positive comments. I'm guessing, and this is just a guess, that it's advantage comes from the fact that all the water mixes with all the coffee in a relatively short period of time, and in one step. Also, when the water gets to the top bowl, it is somewhat cooler than the boiling water that is dripped or percolated in other makers.

Silver Vacuum Pots

I remember back in the 50's it seemed like all of our relatives had these Sunbeam vacuum pots. I was too small to drink coffee so I didn't pay that much attention to them.
How do they work? What do you do to set them up to brew and how do you know when the coffee is ready?
May last two coffee pots ($100+ Braun units) both failed after about three years. My current pot, a Westinghouse (Salton) timer Mr. Coffee work-a-like is only three months old and is slowing down on the brew process, even though I clean it monthly. It seems that coffee pots no longer last forever!
I would seriously consider one of these vacuum pots if I knew more about them!
