"valve" HiFi phono-made in England

Got this neat little HiFi a couple weeks back-needle missing so haven't played it.Guessing early 1960s vintage,mono,with a Garrard changer.Strange, baffled,speaker cabinet meant to be placed with woofer facing corner.Amp,pair of KT66s,is far brawnier than the amps in my European,Russian,and Japanese tube HiFIs Set was put together at "Chungking Arcade",HongKong using all British parts and components. Can't wait for a listen once in operable condition

I had taken an underside photo to show the motor,but it did not come out well-4 pole twin bobbin motor-did not see a syncro ring on the rotor,but there was a little fan.3 different color coded tonearm pickups were included and I think they are magnetic.

I used to have a pair of those Quad amps!!!They are only 20W but VERY clean.You have to use them with very high efficiency speakers-the amps were meant to be used with the Quad electrostatic speakers.Used mine with Technics speakers and the Quads did quite well.I got an offer from an Asian Hi-Fi fan and sold the amps to him.These also run HOT-so they need LOTS of ventilation!!

also note if the Garrard TT is above the amp-the amps heat will dry the lube in the TT quickly.You can put the power amp in the open so it can get the ventilation it needs.

As for the Quad II part of it...

 

Quad II is a classic product, and one that serious audiophile types interested in vintage equipment would like. The design actually predates the Quad ESL speakers, but, that said, I think that combination would have been a standard combination for many years. I'm sure Quad would have suggested it (LOL), although I'm sure they didn't mind selling their amps to someone using some other brand of speaker.

 

Quad is said to have stood for Quality Unit Amplifier Domestic.

 

There should also be a preamp of some sort in that cabinet (the Quad II was a power amp only).

 

I remember when I first started reading the British audio press (in 1989 or 1990?) that Quad was a name I suddenly started seeing a lot. I don't think I'd ever heard of them before, but there were plenty of references in the British press. They were not the cutting edge company that got heavily reviewed, but a lot of those magazine readers owned Quad equipment, and there were plenty of ads for places that would service Quad.

the G.E.C. KT66s have "PA"date code:1958,january Preamp/control box is also Quad and above the amp-found one tube in that.Big ventilation grille on the side with the amp

EGads--the tubes alone--KT66 would be very valueable to Hi-fi geeks and Guitar amp fans.Many "G-Fiddilists" would love those KT66 tubes in their Fender amps!Similar to 6L6.Now I am kicking myself for selling those Quad amps-they came from a trade in-pile at a high end shop in downtown Wash DC.Those are sweet little amps.
