This one'll be a little shorter.

Let's start out with Troy, one of my favorite blonds. He's an Olympic console that currently doesn't work. I've had some luck lately fixing old TVs, so I'll have to tear into him soon. Even not working, he's pretty cool looking!

My other favorite blonde

This is Marilyn, a Silvertone stereo console. Two extra speakers in the sides swing out, or you can separate them from the main cabinet; each speaker wire has an automatic retractor, which I find pretty cool. There's also a jack on the back marked "Remote", but I have no idea what the remote would have done. One of my favorite features is the "Silvertone Stereo" logo at the bottom front--it lights up.

My Favorite Brunette

This is Laura, my Zenith roundie. I've had to replace a few caps in her, but she has the greatest picture. And the sound from this console really rocks!

Into the den...

This is a little Delmonico "stereo" consolette. The stereo effect is not great, as the speakers are right next to each other! Still, my Vint Aqua Blue albums never sounded better!

Latest acquisition

This is Woody, a Sylvania console. He was a wreck when I got him. But even *I* managed to restore him to Health and Vigor. The cabinet still needs a little work and I have to touch up the convergence, but overall, I'm pleased with the results.
This is bad picture of the screen: see next post.

The Before picture

This is what the picture looked like when I got Woody home. It's a lucky thing he made it, too--someone had removed the chassis screws, so the whole thing was sliding around in the cabinet!

After

Had to replace 4 tube sockets that had disintegrated from the heat. Also needed to repair a trace that burned up, adjust everything and clean out 40 years worth of dust. And I didn't fry myself, either!
You can see what I mean about the convergence. Hopefully, will get that taken care of this week.

What cool stuff with those more rare blond tv's and stereos. Now, where did those curtains come from.. could only catch a glimpse of them in the pic. but I see triangles etc..

I`m glad you got a camera Veg! You hav a truly awsome collection! Is it difficult to repair these eletronics? I`m wanting to start on a small radio but deciphering the caps is where Im stuck. I can solder and have a tube tester and ohm meter. Love all your stuff!

That is great to see those old sets and stereos working. I remember we had a "Telefunken" I think was the spelling, from Germany I think, had a record player, radio with AM/FM and even short wave on it, and those swing out side speakers. I gave it to a neighbor years ago, it was still working! I have a newer old tv in the garage, a 71 Sony Trinitron that still works pretty good.

I know cars, mechanical things, building things, etc, but don't know much about electronics. Someone once said to me "make sure your replace all the caps and the whatevers" and I looked at him like he was talking greek.

Electronics is one course I wish I had taken years back. Never too late to start though. I could not fly R/C planes at all a year ago (call me Crash Preston) but pretty darn good now!

Here a coincidence again..
Today was Value Villages 50% off day. I'd forgotten and only went over at about 5pm not expecting much left..until I happened to see an old cabinet.. went over,, two swinging doors on the front and lo and behold an old RCA Victrola phonograph consolette. Two turntables inside.. one slide out 33/78 Garrard and another tiny 45rpm, plus the radio/tuning dials. $10.00 . Again I don't know whether to go back and get it or not... needs a lot of work it looks like, tomorrow if it's there it will be back to $20.

Don (The Good Doctor!) and Kevin-- hie yourselves over to audiokarma.org and you'll find all the help you need.

This time last year, I didn't know a cap from a booger and now I'm replacing them like nobody's business. Even dealing with 25,000 volts--and I'm still here to tell the tale!

Feel free to email me offline and I'll point you to some other useful information.

Me? I'd rather work on mechanical things too, but it seems I only ever get involved in electronics. Go fig.

Veg thanks

I will take you up on the offer. I am sure you remember that I have Laura's sister here, and while she works, she's a bit fuzzy!

Man is this place fun!

Artwork?

Of course that is artwork!! What beautiful things!
I have that same set of mosaics! All four panels. My oldest sister made them back in the early 1960s. She was going to through them out and I rescued them. My nephew, her son, has several parrots and other birds. On my next trip to Los Angeles, where he lives, they'll find a new home.

Your Sylvania set looks very close to one of the ones my parents bought in 1968. A French Provincial console for the living room and a portable set for their bedroom.

Kevin!

No, I didn't know you had Laura's sister! (Well, I might have known but forgot. Ask Bethann to tell you about my memory!) Yours is definitely a more deluxe model than mine; Laura's cabinet is very simple and made of Masonite. Still, she's a lovely little thing.

I think I'm going to fly out to CA and come visit you. We can sit on the floor and play Sonar Sub Hunt and watch cartoons!

Ironrite: I didn't know there were four panels in the series. I picked up these two at the Goodwill for .50 each. And I have a confession to make: the turquoise has been added. They were in shades of yellow, which didn't show up well on my "brick" wall, so I added the blue highlights. I have two other pieces of "art" on the way that I'm going to try where the parrots are and see how it looks. I'll be soliciting opinions!

I love all your pieces and the wall hangings! I love those "spoked" clocks. My favorite is the blonde tv. I love blonde furnishings of all kinds.

Veg come out anytime!

My Sonar Sub Hunt DOES work (a little flaky, but works) and the TV is only a few feet away (probably have to string some cable from the main house).

Masonite...is that kind of like a compressed faux wood? Trying to visualize. Yours has more of a modern look, mine is closer to the "colonial" (although not really) style that my parents liked.

When I saw yours I was just shocked, it's so close!

Sylvania note: I shared a URL months back when we all were discussing TVs, and I joined another site that was really into old electronics, and they were able to answer a question that I had wondered about for years. Sylvania made a TV that you could show your SLIDES on! No kidding. I talked with the guy on line and he told me he found his for $35! That might be something worth keeping your eye on. My uncle had one and showed slides on it one time, and I remember I was so tripped out on it.

Suddenly, it all becomes clear...

Kevin! I do believe that site you joined was audiokarma, 'cause I remember the question about the Sylvania slide projector/TV.
Masonite is sort of compressed wood, but thin. It's what they make pegboard out of. Laura's got a faux woodgrain finish and the masonite is attached to a real wood frame for strength.

Iron! Love the two others in the...quadruptych? Much more colorful than the boids. Which is why I added the blue. Where do you hang yours? Might we see a pic of them in their natural habitat?

Scott! Mmmm, I love blondes, too! And brunettes! And redheads! Uhm, am I still talking about furniture...?

veg, the naughty boy

Blonde are more fun

Wow Veg, I love your electronics. And your house. You and I definitely have to get together. We're not that far apart. I can't fix electronics anymore than I can fix big kitchen appliances. I buy cool electronics and I get home, and they don't work. Consequently, there are quite a few stereos in my basement waiting for someone to take them to a good home where they will be cared for and feed well and brought back to life. They're yours for free if you want the stuff.

I love blondes too. Allow me to show you some of my favorites. First one has no need for a TV Stand.

My next addition...

Is definately going to be a big console stereo. Hard to find, especially the style I want...late 50s, stereophonic, but with external "tape" hookup to run CDs through, plus of course, the Voice of Music turntable.

Any leads in SoCal that you guys come across, I'll pay a reward!!!

Console Hi-Fi's

I would love to find a Magnavox "Concert Grand" Tubed console-My mom had one of those and loved it-enjoyed playing my records on it as a teen-and listening to the tuner in it.I worked on it many times, and knew it well.Replaced the motor in its "Collaro" turntable. And was that unit HEAVY-speakers were in sealed enclosures. It was also Bi-amped-a crossover in the amp for each channel and power amp sections for each speaker.Really miss it-would love to run into another. My Mom replaced it with a Component system she bought from Circuit City several years ago-and gave the Maganavox Hi-Fi to Salvation Army. She played a CD machine into its Aux input and it sounded really good.I played records more than she did.

Veg I just love Laura, she's my favorite of your TVs, I read about your cap changing experience on Audio Karma. Glad she's working well again!
