I have an old Kitchenaid KDI-17 Imperial for sale. It is clean for the age of this machine. It worked very well when we took it out. The story behind this machine is as follows. We purchased a "new to us" old house and this gem was in the kitchen. I was very impressed with this washers ability to clean a load of dirty dishes in such a timely manner. I am used to our old "newer" house with a 5 yr old kenmore dishwasher that paled in comparison to this KDI-17. The water service is very expensive where we live now so after recieving the first bill the KDI-17 was not used again. Wife freaked out at 17 gals per load. No wonder this diswasher washes so well. So it has been replaced during our kitchen remodel with a new efficient washer. Now it is up for sale. The previous owner built the house in 53 and remodeled in 71 so they were the original owners. They were an older couple that were empty nesters for most of that time. I am speculating that she handwashed alot, so the KDI-17 didn't get much use. I am asking $300.00 OR BEST OFFER. If anyone is interested in this time capsule dishwasher leave a voicemail message at 260-515-4255. Thanks, Tim.

OR BEST OFFER

If you read the ad it states OR BEST OFFER. I am not knowledged in old dishwashers except the recent experience of the washers ability to wash so well. If someone wants to view more pictures I put a bunch in my album on this site, not sure if anyone is able to view my album but I could also email pics to anyone intrested. I would rather this KDI-17 go to an enthusiast that would appreciate the fact that its so clean and alluring.

Is and Imperial bottom of the line or top of the line?

Imperial is a mid-line model.  Custom is bottom of the line.  The 17 series also has a limited appeal compared to subsequent series, as it lacks the upper wash arm and so requires more careful loading.  Only a certain segment of vintage KitchenAid fans are going to want such a machine.

$300 is indeed a price that's far too high for your machine.  Top-of-the-line 17-series models like the Superba often show up on Craigslist for $50 or less.  I think people here are not wanting to insult you with what you may consider a super low-ball offer.  Combined with the fact that the machine isn't necessarily as desirable as a Superba, the asking price -- regardless of whether you've qualified it with "or best offer" -- is likely keeping anyone from expressing interest.

It's a nice machine and deserves a home that will use and appreciate it.  It strikes me that any dishwasher would make for a very bulky table.  I would suggest placing an ad on Craigslist with a much lower price.  You can likely sell it for the amount you need to purchase a crib, for which I'm sure there are many ads posted on Craigslist as well.

Good luck.  I hope you can work out a deal.

Crazy but true!

As Ralph has pointed out and others too, this is a mid level machine and will clean just as well as the Superba and Custom models given the correct circumstances of a hot water supply of at least 140 degrees and a good detergent and of course, as we all know, proper loading. This machine is an original 17 series meaning that it lacks the energy saver dry button which shut off the heating element for the dryer while the fan continued to run and thus dried the dishes with their own residual heat.
Your machine is in pristine condidion and if it were mine, I would definitely use it as a spare machine for overflow situations as I do now with a spare Kenmore.

I would not be surprised if Rollermatic makes an offer on it though he has many of the same machines himself.

The Superba is the one to have as it has the heating element in the tank which heats the water during the washes and has the 180 degree Sani Cycle and all the functions are built into the timer.

Your machine is worth far more as a parts donor since none of the parts are really available anymore. You have that separate soak timer mounted on the support rail on the bottom of the machine, which was obsoleted many many years ago, but without which, the sak cycle will be useless. And you have a perfectly functioning motor and pump. Not to mention the timer and the door and other parts.Don't discount someone even wanting the tank!

Many people want the original racks like yours and if in good condition, can garner some nice bucks. As a donor, you will keep many more machines going which would be more useful than turning the machine into a cabinet or storage unit.
It probably has a good 20 more years of life left in it. Ironically, after we got married and renovated our house, I had installed a KDS-18 in our kithcen and then 5 years later, took that machine to the new house and installed your exact machine in its place and it is still running today. That was back in 1993! And that 18 was taken to our Florida Home in 2004 and is still running as well!
So think good and hard as to what you really want to do with that machine. And hang tight..something may happen for you on it.

KDI 17

The $300 asking price is a very good asking price for a neat old DW plus the seller said make an offer. Yes this is much more than most of us paid for our appliances, but it really bothers me that everyone is beating up this seller over his initial asking price. How is he to know that his price is higher than average, and if I wanted this machine and I lived near by $300 is a bargain.

i agree

you (seller) have no idea what it might be worth but i will say that i usually pay between 20-100 bucks for any of my kitchenaids and i have a bunch of them. i just picked up a kds-17a which is the top of the line model for 35.00 in cinti a couple weeks ago and i see another kds-17a with woodgrain panels on ft. wayne craigs list at the present time for 25.00. i have e mailed that seller about it.

but out of the 26 kitchenaid dishwashers i have i have no imperial models of the 17 series, just 3 imperials of the 16 model. so i will call you and make an offer if you don't sell it to anyone else.

when i first started collecting i actually paid 200 for my first kds-17a as i was eager to have one. now i am first to admit i need another kitchenaid anything like a hole in the head! or anymoree dishwashers of any kind. but something in me will not let me pass up a 17 model kitchenaid if the price is right! i just love em!

hopefully you will sell this to someone else before i can buy it!
