Thanks. You know, if Maytag dealers had a wringer washer agitating next to one of their early automatics, they would not have sold many automatics at all. The washing action in that wringer's wide tub, whether round or square, could not be matched in the narrow tub of the automatic. Not being able to see the action in the tub due to the lid switch allowed women to think that the washing action they were familiar with in their Maytag conventional washers was happening in their automatics.

I would like to know also how you keep your tub and its apron so beautiful. I have a twin to your Maytag and have no idea how to keep it that clean. Mine is a daily driver. What do you polish the aluminum with? Thanks and great video !!

Maintaining the shiny wash tub

Hi guys...thanks for all the comments! Keeping the aluminum tub shiny is certainly a challenge, especially dependant upon the brand of detergent one uses. It takes a lot of elbow grease, using "SOS" pads.

As per a previous post, the newly-formulated "ALL" is to be avoided, as it contains some new element that totally darkens the aluminum. Also for those Canadian members, I advise against using "Sunlight". After complaining to Sun Products about my experience with "All", I received a coupon for a free box of "Sunlight" and had the same negative results to the washtub.

I believe Geoff Delp uses only original formula Tide in his (correct me if I'm wrong, Geoff). So I'm going to stick to that as well.

When polishing with an SOS pad, I am very careful to rub in the same direction to avoid scratching the aluminum. But there must be a product available to the common consumer to de-oxidize alumium --- American Airlines uses a product to keep their planes shiny, but I don't know what it is!

I wonder if we used Bon ami or Barkeepers Friend? Low abrasion but maybe affective?

You need a reducing agent to remove oxidation. An acidic compound will do it. You don't want to use anything abrasive on the top of the tub which is highly polished, but that part of the machine wouls not have exposure to the alkaline compounds that darken the aluminum. For the tub, to lighten it, something like Bar Keepers Friend or CLR with a 3M pad and light pressure will work. If the top of the washer is not shiny, Wennol or Flitz polish will bring it up to a mirror shine.

I was thinking about CLR, but when I read the label, it says NOT to use on aluminum!

Tried Bar-Keeper's Friend, but it really didn't work. Seems like SOS pads are my best friend right now!

Nice washer and its so quiet. I like the way the water bobs up around the agitator.
To keep the aluminun shiny, have you tried Mother's California Gold mag and aluminun car polish? Over on Vacuum Land I learned to use it to polish my Kirby, it works great and smells nice too. It also works great to polish silverware.
