Thought I'd post a couple photos of a 1965 Metaframe 55 Gallon Aquarium that I just found <br
Here's a shot in the original owner's home

mmm.....red X's.

I thought the code for photos here was <br
The code doesn't seem to work either? <br
What am I doing wrong

For some reason your photos didn't come through.
If it leaks, just fill it with very warm water(no fish, of course) and let it sit overnight. The warm water will soften the tar and will seal it again. These tanks were very well made!

I'd almost forgot about those metal framed tanks and they remind me of Woolworths. I gave up my fishtank when we moved here in 06 but I kept my Fluval filter knowing one day I'll have another.

Cool....there's the photos!

Thanks for the help getting those to show up. Or did they show up on their own finally?

Sadly, the hot water trick didn't work. I did hot water directly from the faucet, which comes out about 140*F and while it was filling, I had 3 pots boiling water on the stove. As the pots would boil, I'd pour them in, refill them, and put them back on the stove and repeat.

The initial sealing attempt with silicone didn't work either. Wound up breaking the right end glass, which is where the leak was, and replacing it. That gave an opportunity reseal that unresolved leak.

But after it was back together and silicone cured, it started leaking from a natural fault line in the slate. That was even more of a challenge to seal.

The hoods were also a big challenge because they'd been taken apart and one had been modified. The hoods are dual-light versions, so they have a T-8 fluorescent at the front and a dual tube bulb fixture at the rear. I put blue bulbs in the incandescant fixtures, so at night I get a nice moonlight look.

The seller was the original owner and she gave me all of it's original equipment, including the big Supreme Aquaking filter unit which hangs on the back and has a big 1/4 horse electric motor just sitting upside down, on top of a plastic box, and driving a water pump. I've put that, the original Supreme Heater back on the tank. Both still work...but I'm not going to use the filter unit.

Ah yes, Fluval...

I'm running a Fluval 405 on this one. It's rated for 100 gallons, but at 340gph, it's probably underated for big single tail Goldfish (2 Comets and 1 Common). I should probably have about 10x the gallons in filtration.

Yeah, I feel very lucky to have found it. The 5's, 10's, and 20 gallons are more common and appear easier to find, but I was after a big one.

I was reeling in a 100 gallon w/ hoods and stand, down in LA, but in the stalling around waiting for the guy to send better photos and dimensions (that bad-boy was 63" long!), he'd sewn up a deal with a guy in NY. So even as we speak, that one is being crated and shipped back east.

The Fluval I have is I think without going digging it out a model 404, 4 trays inside the canister. My tank was 33 gal and the last few years I had it running I had 3 comets and 1 very large pearlscale Oranda (Bubbles). The comets had actually been thos 15 cent each feeder fish from PetSmart that are never supposed to live LOL They did and they got big. So did Bubbles, she went from ping pong ball to near tennis ball size before she died.
In this pic you can just make out a bit of a comet

I knew one person who actually bought feeder fish as "keepers" because they were so cheap. If I remember right, her rule of thumb was to buy twice as many as one wants to have in the end. However, my one trial with a couple of these fish was pretty dismal. Both died within a week or so. Predictably right after I'd gotten sort of attached to them.

Man, thats nice !!!!!!!!!

I used to see that type of tank all the time back in the late 60`s early 70`s havent seen this type in many years.

Our original Comet is a feeder. My mom bought my daughter a little one gallon "Fish TV" for her birthday. We put two tiny feeders in it. Maybe 6mo or a year later, one of them died, so we replaced it. A year or maybe less later the final original feeder died......leaving the replacement to live on. So now, about 5 years later, that replacement is 7+ inches long with a big ol' tail.

A couple months ago we bought him a big Common that's about 8" because I couldn't find any large Comets. I guess the Comets really only come as 1" feeder fish because they can ship more from overseas that way....and because they aren't sought after like the fancy's which bring more money. While looking for a large Comet we stumbled across a 4 incher at local fish store, and he was still alive in their tank about 2 weeks later, so we rescued him.

Great Tank!

I also have kept fish since I was about 10 years old. I was just as fascinated with the filters and pumps as I was with the fish. I currently don't have much space here in Hollywood but I have a 37 gallon tank with goldfish in my living room. I was looking for an old Metaframe tank but didn't find any i liked enough to ship. The only vintage thing I use on my tank is a classic green Dynaflo 150 power filter. Its simple construction and design makes it still one of the best filters I've used. I use disposable whisper cartridges and it runs great and keeps the tank crystal clear.

Beautiful tank you have there!

Did you see that 100 galloner in N. Hollywood?

Matthew, did you see that one on CL about 2 weeks ago? Guy had the tank, hoods and original stand. I was soooo close.

I've got this one for sale right now if you're interested, and I can deliver it.

It's a 55gal, so 48x13x21 51" tall on the stand. I don't have the hoods and it would need to be polished better and resealed.

I'm still debating firing up the Aquaking. It's all there, so all I need is to stuff the box with glass wool and pour some carbon into the "sock" that sits in there...and fire it up.

I guess I want to give the Fluval a chance first, so maybe in a few weeks.

What kind of goldfish are you keeping?

Interesting to see those metal frame fish tanks again. I've had fish tanks myself in the past, but I never saw these shiny frames. Are they stainless steel or plated? As far as I know we only had painted steel frames here and they always rusted so they had to be repainted every couple of years.

These are stainless, as are the hoods. The stand is just standard angle iron, cut, welded by hand, ground off smooth and painted.

I've learned that there were several manufacturers. Metaframe and Pemco were the top, and then there was C&C, Sternco and probably others. Maybe your painted metal tanks were from another manufacturer? The Metaframe and Pemco's were stainless.

Here's a shot with a new background I'm trying. The difference between the 2 light bulbs can be seen too. The original "aquarium" bulb on the right photographs better, but in person, the Hagen Prower-Glo on the left looks better.

Great Tank !

I have a 55 gal Metaframe with the hoods and stand just like your's. My slate has too many cracks to hold water. I am thinking about using silicone and putting a plexi panel over the slate and then making a terrarium in it instead of a fish tank.

I do have a really cool old metaframe filter and one of the original diatom power filters from the 50's. The diatom will take 50 gal of water that you cannot even see through and make it crystal clear in 15 min.

I love your setup - you just can't beat an old metal frame tank for looks especially the larger sizes. When I was 15, I worked at an aquarium shop and they had a 27 year old toothless Piranha, (he would "gum" his diner to death), in a 75 gal metal frame tank - it was a really cool size because it had more depth than the 55.
