Some of the stereo threads here made me think of some of the old stereo equipment I have owned in the past and the music that was "'happnin'" at the time. Anyone here get into The B-52's? The 1st time I heard them was on a Pioneer reel-to-reel. Just wondered if there were any B fans here? That's about it.

Indeed!

Oh buddy, some of my fondest memories from the most skewed out scenes of my serious party days are hooked into a B-52's soundtrack. I can still see one couple, done up like Liz (well, Liz-meets-Devine) and Dick hoisting cocktails in the middle of a crowded kitchen, with Liz's spiked heel poking a hole into a pot holder, determined to make its way through to the vinyl floorcovering and "Planet Claire" blasting the doors off the place. The music combined with killer smoke to make the whole scene a regular riot. Those were the days.

"Some say she's from Mars, or one of the 7 stars that shines out at 3:30 in the morning . . . WELL, SHE ISN'T!!!!!"

She came from Planet Claaaaaaaaaaire.

Uranus!!!!!!!!!

While Rock Lobster has gotten a bit cliche', I still hear something different in it every time I hear it.

Here comes a BIKINI WHALE!!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

A Little Later

"Love Shack" was probably their biggest hit ever. Way mainstream for them, but it remains a catchy tune to this day.

Hop in my Chrysler,
It's as big as a whale,
And it's about to set sail!

Actually, I didn't even know who the B-52's were, had never heard them, but saw their debut album back in the late 70's and bought it just based on the cover. One of the few times the old saying "don't judge a book (or album) by it's cover" did NOT apply. It was way better than I could have imagined.

they're appearing March 28 here at the River Rock Casino out in the 'burbs..... so they must be touring the west coast right now. Almost tempted to go....almost....

"52 Miles West of Venus"!

"Private Idaho", "Song For A New Generation", Their version of "Downtown" totally destroys the original by Petula Clark! I just loved "606-0842" too!

Saw them here in town (ISU Braden Auditorium) for a concert in 1989. I will never forget it! A total dance party when "Love Shack" went to #1 on the Hot 100. They encored with "Rock Lobster" of course! I never feared for my safety like I did for the B-52's! We had front row balcony seats overlooking the main floor - three levels up! The front railing was no higher than your knees which you could just fall right over onto the main floor - scary! Also the whole place just vibrated and shook during all the numbers as everyone was jumping and dancing around while on their feet the entire time! I thought the whole balcony was going to collapse from the vibration! Whew!

sand in my hair..

Favorite song. Dirty Back Road, Saw them on Saturday Night Live. They did Rock Lobster. That was in 1979. I've been hooked ever since. If you have a chance to see then live, Go!!!and wear a wig!!!

I'm not no Limburger....

Loved them from the beginning and saw them twice, first at the old Ritz, then years later at Radio City Music Hall. Great shows.

If I'm not mistaken, Kate Pierson now runs a B & B upstate (maybe in Woodstock?)

Here comes Brenda... Brenda Holiday!

Definitely go see them live if you have the opportunity. It is such a party and works so much better than Zoloft... ;)

Love 'em!

Tina went to the ladies room
Saw written on the wall
"if you'd like a very nice time, just give this number a call"

They were such a break from the 70's music (which I also love now, in retrospect) and their look was fabulous.

It'd sure be nice to have a new sound emerge from this morass of hip-hop, "new" country and oldies that dominate the radio. But that would mean Clear Channel would have to hire more than one program director for the country, and that would ruin the stock price ;-)

Hip hop has got to go (sorry Rick)

"New" Country should be called Neo-Southern Rock

re: Oldies stations: Yeah after you've heard the same 50 songs over and over.

Satellite gives you a better selection (not much). Sirius has two noteworthy channels, The Garage and The Vault. The garage is obviously garage music but some of it consists of obscure oldies and The Vault tries to be what FM Album rock used to be.

On the B-52s.

What can I say? They rule! I like their song 52 Girls off the first album.

Oh, and Chuck...

Yes, Frig, I somehow missed that last night (dealing with a sick ferrett) but saw it when I came back to the post today. Whoopsie!!! Love Shack BABY!!!!!

Chuck

But HERE'S something I haven't seen mentioned yet!

Kate and partner have their own little love shacks for rent in the Catskills from $150-$275/night! You gotta follow the link and take the tour. Retro-Kitch-Camp all the way!!!! Here's a sample of one of the kitchens (there's a pink one on the tour too!)!!!

My gosh guys, thanks for all the responses about my B's. Pretty overwhelming. I love the post about being better than Zoloft. Yeah, I agree that listening to their music triggers some endorphin response at alot of my brains' receptors. I know the whole YOUTUBE mania has gotten out of hand but you gotta agree that it's the place nowadays to find what you want but I found some vintage B-52 videos from 1978. Should check them out. Especially "Give Me Back My Man." Party Out of Bounds re-mix is probably the best re-mix of all time. Thanks again guys for the response.

Thinking back, I can see where the B-52's helped start me down the road of collecting post-war stuff.

I grew up in a white bread neighborhood, in a white bread town, where the epitome of style was Colonial (or Mediterranean, for the more flamboyant types ;-) The B-52's were such a break from all that, and their look was so wild. I think that's what got me interested in MCM stuff in the first place.

Of course, the downside of that is the struggle to keep the living room looking like an adult's living room, rather than a college kid's, but it's a fun struggle. Plus, I have the knotty pine rec room to showcase the campy stuff. When you have a knotty pine rec room, you really don't have any options other than to go campy. :-)
