Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Snowy was just sodium perborate (oxygen bleach), not sure if it contained enzymes.

Biz OTOH was a pre-soak product that contained oxygen bleach (sodium perborate) and enzyme (protease).

There was a rush of pre-soak products containing enzymes at at that time (Axion, Amway's Trizyme, etc....). All largely took a page from fact sodium perborate does remove stains in warm to cool water, but requires more time than at elevated temps. Then fact enzymes also work best given extended contact time, and warm to slightly cool water.

Certain soils are set by hot water, especially those derived from protein. For ages housewives or anyone else doing laundry were advised to pre-wash or pre-soak things that would be done in hot water or boil washed in cold first to prevent setting of stains or soils.

When first introduced few detergents on US market contained enzymes or oxygen bleach. P&G (makers of Biz) upped their game by incorporating both into nation's top selling detergent (Tide), and that caused Biz sales to slowly tank.

In fact Tide with Bleach killed off sales from P&G's first detergent with oxygen bleach, Oxydol. That brand too was sold off along with Biz in the great P&G reshuffling about a decade or so ago now. [this post was last edited: 2/24/2021-19:39]

That's why Sears offered the 30 minute enzyme soak cycle from 1970-1975. A Sears exclusive, don't recall a Whirlpool product offering it as an automatic feature.

New Biz is a pale comparison to old version. When Redox Brands (company made up of former P&G executives) first got the brand P&G continued to make the product. That agreement ended and so company had to look elsewhere.

When P&G continued making Biz for Redox they had access to patents and formulas that obviously were not going to be released.

Tried a box of the "new" Biz (picked up at K-Mart without looking carefully), and it was very frothy, had a cloying bubble gum/fruit punch sort of scent, and didn't rinse out easily at all. Barely managed to finish box (waste not want not), but never bothered again.

Happily spotted case of the NOS Biz on fleaPay, so that's me for you....

I believe our Kenmore 800,with its Enzyme Soak cycle), came with either a coupon for Axion, or a sample box of Axion. That was the product I used in that cycle for presoaking my clothes. I think Axion came out before Biz. Cannot find any Axion commercials on Youtube, but found a print ad for Axion on Ebay featuring Arthur Godfrey.

I used to use Biz all the time, in conjunction with Cheer Powder. And for whites and lights I began using Tide w/ Bleach powder. And also selecting cycles either Whites, Allergen, or Sanitize cycles temps for those same whites & lights. I no longer needed to add Biz for those difficult stains. My washer with long cycles featuring ultra high temps and steam take care of everything. Within the last year I switched to liquid detergent so I could use my Precision Dispense auto dosing dispenser. Courtesy of Frigilux's guidance, use Tide Ultra Stain Release and I don't have to worry about anything not being cleaned, even all stains. I just let the detergent and my washer with needed long cycles to tae care of everything.
