Vintage Frigidaire Dryer

I just picked this Frigidaire Dryer up a couple weeks ago. Only $20.00. Haven't had a chance to try it out to see if it works or not though. Was told it did. Only thing wrong with it is the knob on the left is broke. Anyone know what year this is? And does anybody have a spare knob they would be willing to sell?

Hey Justin, nice score for 20 dollars on the TR-60! These things run better when they are cleaned out. Pull the filtrator cartridge out and feel up under the drum to see if it is stuffed full of lint. If so, time for a dust and clean! The front rollers will also probably need to be taken apart and re-lubricated. Just take off the four front screws around the door opening to take the front inner pannel off to get to the rollers. A sure sign that they need help will be a horrible rumble while rotating.

Hopefully the calrod-like elements are in good shape. Might want to take the back cover off prior to plugging it in to make sure all the cloth-covered wires are in good shape. The belt/s number is a 4L480, and if you need a replacement bearing for the drum, the Grainger item number is a 1L046 (NTN number 6005LLBC3/5C).

Let me know if you need anything else! Sorry, I don't have a replacement knob.

Funny story

My cousin was out going to a couple garage sales one day. She called me up and said, they have an old oven and dryer. She said she wasn't sure the brands or the years of them. She wanted to know if she should buy them for me. I told her to hold off and I will come by and take a look. So I went down there and this was the dryer they had. I also ended up buying the wall oven they had there as well. A late 50's GE Wall oven. They wanted $20 each. Not a bad deal, if I do say so myself. I think its cool that my family are looking for the vintage applainces for me as well. P.s. here is a pic of the wall oven

Nice GE oven! Great way to find these, but I will say finding them at a garage sale would be RARE up here.

The Filtrator is from 1952 through 1954. This is the first GM Frigidiare designed dryer - the previous models were outsourced dryers through Hamilton. Let us know what the model number tag says (on the frame above the filtrator cartridge) - there was a revised model (the filtrator chamber has a pitched bottom vs the original flat bottom) that would indicate if it is the later one.

Um, actually they did not become "Filtrators" untill '55. The early ones such as the one pictured here are "Filtramatics".

It would be a good idea to do as Ben has advised and give the machine a good service. The water-tray looks as if it has had water standing in it for a while.(Since the machine is not vented, water collects in that tray and must be removed after each load---unless a drain tube is attached.) No telling what the lint- filter (located just above)looks like.

It may take a while but now that you have alerted everyone to your need of a knob, give us some time to sift through things to see if there is one.

Bob,there were design changes being made all along on the "R" line of dryers i.e. TR-60 and TR-61 Filtra-Matics. Then in mid-54 came the TR-2 line i.e. TR-60-2 and TR-61-2. Many improvements were added in particular to deal with the lint issues. While the Tech-Talk does refer to these dryers as Filtra-Matics, there are tables that refer to them as Filtrators for the first time. So I am guess it was during this time period when these dryers became known across the board as Filtrators----if for no other reason than to indicate that they were of an advanced design.

Its a GM thang. Go figya.
