Vintage GE Stack Washer Dryer Combo - Nampa ID - $200

I've been helping shop for a stackable washer and dryer for my sister & her husband's new place. Saw this on there for cheap. Thoughts?

Description:
"Used GE spacemaker washer and dryer. We took this unit out from a condo up north. It is old but hasn't been used much. One out of ten loads or so when it gets to rinse and spin mode, on regular cycle, it will stop and you have to move the knob to get it going again. I have looked and it may be a timer issue..? Other than that it works great. If you wash on Delicate Cycle or Permament Cycle we have not had any issues. $200"

If this is still Franklin built, the washer is prone to suds locks. Rinsing is poor (like causes skin rashes) unless it is set for an extra rinse and this design goes back to the late 80s although I am not saying this set is that old or that it is as bad as the original design.

well, if anything, capacity is really limited in one of these...

thinking too the price is a bit steep for that exact model....

while I did grab one of CL a few years back, it was used in a travel trailer....it functioned well for our needs, but always in the back of my head that it would not last long, and parts are scarce if not NLA....

if space is an issue, I would think you would do better investing in a Whirlpool ThinTwin…..

or even going with one of the Avanti type of portables(1.6 or larger).....more durable, bigger capacity, higher spin speed....portable or permanent hookup....

what are the exact requirements for a set your looking for....

Well...

Here's the hitch. They're now looking for something closer to 4.0 CF capacity for the washer. Not sure that's possible for a combo unit. I just looked on CL and this was the first thing I saw. We still need to check out the local appliance store near us and see if they got anything. I'd prefer they get an older (more reliable) unit than a new one, but in the end it's their call, I'm just here to suggest the best ones I can find. Thanks for your advice guys.

even the larger ThinTwin is standard capacity, maybe reaching up to 3.0 cu ft....the only way to go larger is an HE TL impellor version, or a FLer….

Could that be their polite and non-confrontational way of saying that they'd like something newer, or don't care for stacked units?

I found this machine at the local appliance shop for $295. It's the only stack they have. I want to hear what you guys think of a machine like this, I've heard some people say that this doesn't do that great of a job washing, or it's not that reliable.

I actually think their pretty decent for the most part.....

we got one for my MIL, Kenmore version, way back in 2003....oddly enough, never an issue from it, still going strong today....

the Kenmore version has a Dual Action agitator....the combination with the indexing tub really works well...

most everything is serviceable from the front...

Dave,

No, my sister & brother in-law need a stack for a closet area next to a bathroom in their new shop. They've said they're gonna look into this Kenmore one since it's a 2.7 CF electric unit, and it's right here in our area for a cheaper price. They don't want a new one because that is too expensive.
