I found this hotpoint fridge on craigslist. I was told it needed some work. I ended up taking it to a repair shop and was told that the compressor was shot. My question is does anyone know where I could possibly get a compressor that will fit in it or is someone out there need this fridge for parts? I don't have the model number of it, since the tag was missing when i bought it.

I haven't seen this model before, but looks like around 1961. I am not sure if you can use a GE compressor in this or not. Best of luck,Walt

Why, how pretty that is!

A competent technician can replace the compressor and restore the cooling system without difficulty.
I did not say cheaply...

But it is unusual for a compressor itself to fail. They do, but not nearly as often as the start (klixon) system does. Can you test the electrical systems yourself? If the compressor motor is truly open, then, well, that is all she wrote. But if there is resistance across the start windings and run windings, then the chances are fairly decent that it is not dead.

Hotpoint fridge

Hi, I have a 56 Hotpoint fridge, and the service manual for it...they were a strange creature! I do not know if yours is the same, but some hotpoints from late 50s have 3 motor windings! they use the third as part of the overload and start system. I don't know if yours is like that, but looks like a great model,is it complete with all shelves and bins? Might be worth getting fixed. I also heard those old compressors didn't give much trouble. Good luck,Walt

It even has

this little shelf that swings out for these containers. It holds three containers. One of the containers is missing. Just was wondering what would one put in the containers?

Those containers...

I would guess they're for whatever tiny bits of leftovers that a "Good Homemaker" would save for later. And when no one wanted that half-portion of day old spam, you could hide it in some sort of Jello salad.

Nice Hotpoint!

The "new" Hotpoint is a much nicer unit IMO. Somebody who has a refrigeration/HVAC connection and associated hands-on experience can probably get the dead one going cheaply.

I once bought an early 60's Coldspot bottom freezer model from Goodwill. It seemed like it ran, but when I got it home the sounds it was making were from the fans running, not the compressor. Lucky for me, I found a wire had come off the compressor connection. Re-attached it and I was in business. I ended up eventually giving that fridge to my sister after she decided to get rid of her '50 GE combo that had latching issues on the freezer door. Even the defrost cycle floor heater in the freezer section still worked, which was unusual for a Coldspot that old.
