Make me an offer I can't refuse!
I have a Model 3B mixer which has been upgraded to the 4C size Stainless steel bowl and beater. The bowl is 4qt capacity and the beater locks on to the planetary like the ones we are used to seeing. The original beater on the 3b had an aluminum locking device on the beater and a spring like clip on the planetary which caused the beaters to wear out. Cannot happen with this setup. Plus you get the larger bowl as well.

It is white in color though it has yellowed thru the years. It has not been used in probably 15 years but I turned it on and it ran just fine. I cleaned it up and will repack the gear housing with new grease prior to shipping it if it is sold.
The KitchenAid logo is missing on one side and the attachment cap is the newer style cap. I do have the original flat one if you prefer it.

Also, I have the Cream colored cotton KitchenAid mixer cover which will go with the mixer.

Let me know if you are interested in it and I will carefully wrap it and ship it to you.

If you still have that baby on my way down to Englewood, I might grab it as a House Warming present for my Dad's house.

It will probably be their only Vintage Appliance in that house ever. She'll probably tell me to take it with me when I go back. LOL

Questions for Stevet

first time I see a KA mixer modified like this.

1. Was this difficult to do? Have to change out many parts? I know about the 3 B beater issues and finding a replacement is getting more and more difficult and more expensive among collectors.

2. Is there much difference in the size of the beaters of a 3 C and a 4 C?

I have one too.

I have a restored 3B where they had done the same thing Steve did because they said the parts are getting harder to find. I don't have an original beater to compare. My 4C uses the same beater but the bowls are different.

Everything is better when it's bigger!

Mix Guy,
I do not think you would be able to find the conversion kits anymore since I did this one back in the early 80's. The kit contained a 4 qt bowl in glass or stainless steel as well as a new planetary that goes right on where the old one was and a 4 qt beater. The beater is probably about 2 inches wider because the 4 qt bowl is wider than the 3 quart bowl. It also included the newer style bowl clamp which was designed to hold the bowl in place but would not wear out like the original design.

I also have the 4C mixer which I use whenever I do any cake baking (from store bought mixes.) It still works great.
Just last night I pulled out my K45 mixer from the garage and made Sesame Cookies as they are not to be found here in my part of Florida. Hadn't been used in well over 10 years and it ran like a champ.
You may want to try Ebay for a conversion kit. I just don't have any numbers to help you with. You may also want to try contacting Kitchenaid direct and see if they can help you. Another long shot might be to contact the Kitchenaid store in Greenville, Ohio. There may be someone there who may know what you are talking about and be able to help. They have a small KA museum there and it is a nice place to check out.

Nice Paint Job, Ralph!

I am not into turquoise, Ralph, but that is a great color on that mixer. I also like the frosted glass bowl. Where did you get that? Mine is the clear Pyrex style.

Your mixer definitely has to always be out on the counter to be admired, even if you never use it!
Speak to you soon
Steve

Thank you Steve.

Actually I bought it after it had been restored and they did a great job. I love the color. Hubby hates it. Says it's too feminine. I pointed to myself and said "really?" End of that discussion. It does have a prominent place on the counter.

Anywho, ironically I took that picture before I actually used it. It came with that bowl and when the bowl is empty it works just fine. As soon as you put anything in it the thing dances because that bowl is a little too small for the larger beater with stuff in it I guess. I switched it with the clear glass bowl from the 4C and it works great.

You're right about how well these things work. I put away my bowl lift Kitchen Aid and I use the 3B and have the 4C as well, with my Pasta roller attachment and the new Spiralizer. Both work great and that thing just powers through. I'll pull out the big one on occasion but when I'm just cooking for the two of us this one works great. And it gets used a lot. I make pasta at least once a week if not more and we're getting pretty creative with the Spiralizer.

Lots of new attachments

Are now available for the mixers. I saw them over the weekend and was looking at those exact ones that you mentioned. I have to see if my sister in law has a mixer and maybe we will get her the spiralizer. She is always shoe stringing veggies.

You use the roller style pasta maker? Does it bog down the moxer at all? Does it run hotter than usual?

Yes I use the roller attachment and the cutter.

The mixer doesn't seem to bog down but I suspect it could if the dough wasn't pliable enough. Mine goes right through. Then I let it sit for a few minutes (hang it on a rack) and then use one of the cutters to cut the pasta unless I'm doing egg noodles and then I just roll up the sheets and cut it with a knife. It gets warm but no more than it would for anything else. I've never had to stop and let it cool or even feel that I needed to. It's funny one of the main reasons I kept the bowl lift model on the counter was for these attachments because I use them so much. Then one day I thought why not use my stand mixers because the attachments fit those just fine and I have been doing that ever since without a problem.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the spiralizer. I had one with a crank and it worked OK but the one on the mixer is amazing. I used it to make the Apple Crisp that Kevin posted a few weeks back. It peeled, cored and sliced the apples all at once and just flew through. I used it the other night on sweet potatoes to use like curly fries. It was well worth the money. And that doesn't seem to bog it down either.

Spiralizer

Ralph, thanks for the testimonial on the Spiralizer. KA is running ads for them on TV this holiday season, but the reviews on line seem to run 50/50 with complaints regarding ease of use, durability and cleaning. I'd mainly use it for coring and peeling apples instead of my hand crank contraption, but for the price and my needs, it didn't seem to be worth it.

Re: 3 quart bowls, I ended up with one that has the screw-on base, having purchased it on ebay thinking it would fit my K4. It's useless to me, so if anybody has the mixer for it and needs a spare, hit me up.

Spiralizer

I don't remember what I paid for mine exactly as I buy nothing at full retail I only buy sales. I think I got it at Williams and Sonoma on one of their 20% sales with free shipping and paid maybe around $80. The decent Crank ones are around $50. I have a friend who bought a cheaper one and really struggles with it so he has pretty much abandoned it. I guess it's not very sturdy, etc.

I suppose it's like anything else and would depend on how much you use it. I certainly can't say it's not well made. It is, IMHO, very well made and very sturdy but again I had a hand held job that was OK but not nearly as easy to use as this one. I haven't filled out a review but if I were to I'd give it 5 stars across the board.

The reality is I also used a hand crank pasta machine for years that worked well but nothing replaces the electric motor. I had the motor for the crank model and burned it out. So that's when I got the KA version. Freeing up both hands to deal with the dough makes the whole process so much easier and faster. But again I make pasta at least once a week if not more so I get my use out of it.

Convert 3B with 4C Part

I don't know if this is what you would need to do the conversion but I did see this on eBay this morning. It doesn't include the beater or the bowl. I can tell you the 3B bowl does not work on the 3B after the conversion. You'll need the 4C bowl as well.
