I love this site!...my dear friend Andrew, ,(won't share his nickname just yet)! told me about this site and im hooked.. For those of you who were curious, during a recent trip to NY, I went into Shop Rite and saw for sale several laundry soaps I thought were defunct/discontinued. They were Ajax,Yes,Oxydol, and Bold..I would love to get my hands on some Cold Power!

Bluing?

One product that I miss is LaFrance bluing powder. I wear white dress shirts daily and I loved the results, but one day I couldn't find it anywhere. I called the 800 nbr. on the box, and they said the company that made it for Dial closed it's doors and they hadn't been able to find anyone to make it for them. I find that hard to believe, is it that bluing has just gone along the wayside? I found it way less destructive than bleach on my clothes, and it did a fantastic job of whitening. I was in my local Wal-Mart from Hell yesterday, and not one bluing product was found. When LaFrance was discontinued I ordered a case that was still available from the warehouse, but sooner or later, I'll run out, and I need a good alternative. My shirts are so white, they seem to glow and I'll miss that for sure! Any suggestions out there?

Kroger in Little Rock carries bluing. Not sure you have Kroger Grocery in St. Louis. It is a pisser about detergents. I was in another state over the weekend; lo and behold I saw Wisk and Dynamo...have'nt seen those at Kroger or Wally world in forever; I thought they had stopped making them.

Her name is Mrs. Stewart

and she sells liquid bluing. Doesn't smell as nice as La France (I don't think MSB has a scent at all), but she's the only bluing I can find in this region.

(Humour)

She looks so sad and angry. Like the Mr. ran off with his secretary or the man from the DeSoto garage, leaving her with 9 children. At least she has a new Kelvinator pair, and she's going to take in washing to make ends meet.

Vive LaFrance

Oh she's a sour dame indeed. Have tried putting her in the dispensers of my LG, but she settles into a sludge at the bottom and stays there. If you don't follow her instructions, she will streak your load, but don't dispair, she'll fade with a few washings with ammonia added.

I, too, miss LaFrance...I'll never forget putting a cup of it in our 1960 GE filter pan and watching it dissolve into a sexy dark blue surge with the first floods from the recirculator.

Scents

I miss the scents of the older (can't say vintage b/c I don't remember much from before the 1980's) detergents. today's detergents seem to be way off key, for me at least. If I wasnted to smell some mountain rain - I'd go to a mountain. Give me some classic scents back please.

Bluette is another liquid bluing that works very nicely. It can be ordered online, but I can't remember the name of the website.

Cold Power

Hi Shane,
If you ever visit Australia, you will find heaps of Cold Power here as it is one of the main brands available, curious it is not available in U.S.A.
Robert,
Your collection of vintage detergents is amazing, and all the boxes front-faced and stacked perfectly, you would have done very well working in my old Woolworths store all those years ago.
Also the Drive box caught my eye, did you know that design was the exact same one we had here in Australia many years ago.
If you're interested the advertising slogan went like this:
'"Ordinary powders get clothes ordinary clean, but Drive strives for total clean."
You see the soap powder aisle was my aisle I looked after when I worked as young bloke in Woolworths.
Cheers guys.
Steve.

Cold Power: reply to Pulsatron

Wow!! Thank you Steve!!!...I didn't know that Cold Power was still available in Australia...is it powder or liquid?..Maybe we could work out a deal..Is there anything here in the states you would like? maybe I could send it to you..and you send some Cold Power?? Just a thought..anyhow thanks for the info!

e-mail me if you wish

take care

I miss Dash. You could pour in a whole cup in a FL machine, use soft water, and it still wouldn't oversuds. Although, I can't remember if it cleaned all that well.

Liquid Bluing

Bluette Bluing liquid can be ordered at WWW.Gristedes.Com, a NYC based grocer which will send you many of your favorites. I love to order my RedPack canned Tomatoes and Levy's Rye bread from them. As a native New Yorker, these are products I won't do without!

Agiflow- you can order Classic Scent Ajax from Gristedes.com

OK, this thread made me buy a bottle of Mrs. Stewart's bluing the other day. Haven't used it in years, so I thought "Oh, what the Hell". Washed my white sheets last night, hot wash and detergent, another hot wash with bleach only, first cold rinse, last rinse with Mrs. Stewart's. OMG, I was blinded by the light when I opened the lid on the Maytag. Happy white washing!
