Within the 1960's model lineup, the A906, A806, A606, A206 (and maybe the A406 and A106) are the Motors, Pumps ,Transmissions and cabinets(forgetting about bleach dispensers) interchangeable?

 

Is having two speeds a function of a different motor or is it some external control?

Motors interchangeable from 1956-2006 helical (I think a few AMPs snuck into the early years).

Pumps interchangeable from 1956-2006 (minus AMP).

Transmissions interchange: First generation 1956-1965. Second generation 1966-2006.

Cabinets:

1956-1965: I never tried mix-matching 1950's cabinet parts with early to mid 60's parts or vice versa. Some will work, others may not. The early 1956-1965 bases went through a few changes. Obviously the pivoting motor base is not compatible with the sliding motor carriage base design but later sliding motor carriage bases with bigger springs are backwards compatible with earlier versions.

1966-1979: Completely interchangeable. Most cabinet parts other than the top (console mounting) are compatible with later models. Base interchangeability from 1966-2006.

Small inner/outer tub 1956-1993 (may be some incompatibility with very early helical models as there were some funky AMP tubs used).

Large inner/outer tub 1966-1993.

Tub covers, triangular seal, and metal band clamp 1956-1993 (minus AMP).

Unsure if tub bracing is the same on the 1994-2006 models as the previous 1966-1993 models.

Unsure about console compatibility/mounting on 1994-2006 versions as previous 1980-1993.

1994-2006 has their own inner and outer tub/tub cover design. Also their own water valve, injector, and fill flume.

I have a collection of about 20 Tags (washers, dryers) where some have survived storage better than others. My objective is to end up with an:

In good working order. Being able to recycle parts will help. I'm still looking for an A906 (yes, good luck to me)

That should be pretty easy to accomplish. The higher end 02's are getting tricky to find these days but are still out there.

Maytag 06 washer parts interchangeability

The 06 machines had a lot of interchangeability except of course there’s two different transmissions, depending on whether you’ve got the regular or larger capacity machine.

If you go back to the early two belt dependable care washers, they did use a unique motor for the first three years that is not interchangeable. They also had a different damper and they had two different spring set ups for the suspension springs until they got to the 06 machines.

Hi Ken, are you going to do the work on these machines yourself sounds like an ambitious project but a very doable one if you’ve got the time and inclination.

I’ve got a friend here in Northern Virginia that has over 30 Maytag washers and dryers restored and he sold the property last July. The machines are still there, but they’re probably all about to be scrapped. I’m trying to deal with the guy that bought the property but not having any luck there’s over 200 machines on the property most are fully restored lots of GE Machines and just about everything else you can imagine.

I’m not interested in any of the Maytag as I already have seven or eight sets of Maytag, which is more than enough, but there’s a few other very rare machines especially the ones that are in pink and turquoise, etc. that I might try to get.

My quick lookup parts book indicates 201805 and 201807 motors for all helical models except a 140/140S which used a 200865 motor and a 200064 AMP pump. AMP models used a 200224 motor.

Early Helical Dr., Maytags

The 123 was the first 2 Belt Helical Drive Maytag. It came out in 1956. It used a unique motor as did several other early two belt machines. The motor was mounted on a pivot and mounted from both ends.

The 140 and 140 S were AMP style machines nothing was interchangeable except for the main drive belt.

I think the 141 was a helical Drive machine. I think they changed from the pivoting motor mount to the one with the little plastic rollers around 1960 maybe 59.

Maytag should’ve stayed with that pivoting motor mount that was the best design they ever had in the two belt machines because it gave a nice firm lock up when it was agitating and allowed a very nice acceleration into spin while it was pumping out the water and getting up to speed.

As long as they're between machines of the same speed (single-speed or 2-speed), then the motors should be absolutely interchangeable. However, a 2-speed motor cannot go into a 1-speed machine or vice-versa. This is true for just about all Maytags made from 1956 onwards until the buyout I think.

My quick look up parts guide from the 1980's shows a different story. Probably wrong on my end unless Maytag engineered the newer motors to be backwards compatible. I'll scan later today.

Replacement motors for Maytag two belt washers

The 2–1805 1 speed and 2–1807 2 speed motor were replacement motors that could mount either in the pivoting cradle that was used in the earlier helical drive machines or in the later machines with the motor carriage with the little plastic rollers.

The problem comes in when you try to put one of the newer motors with the through end mounting bolts in an older washer it will not fit in the cradle mount machines.

So basically, you cannot take the newer motors and put them in those early pivot mount machines, but if you have the special replacement motor, it will mount either of course Maytag long ago discontinued the motor for the pivot mount washers, even before whirlpool bought Maytag.
