Yeah, behind the panel is the evaporator. Drips into the trough to defrost. This way it was a "automatically defrosting refrigerator" like the GE Combination or the wall-mount GE which have been on here.

That said, out of curiosity, which was the first fan-forced frost free refrigerator and freezer? We had friends who had a mid-60s Duracrest (Kelvinator) top freezer unit with the exposed evaporator in the refrigerator and fan in the freezer...they also had an early 60s Sears bottom freezer with fan-forced both places. I'm assuming it must be Westinghouse...they touted "Cold Injector" in the late 50s.
