That's....

....a Spacemaker 24. I think it's a 1958 or later model; the '57's had copper-colored knobs and the escutcheon for the clock was copper-colored as well. AW Archive pic originally posted by Ben swestoyz.

Ad and Mix and Match question

What kind of colors, besides white, turquoise, some kind of yellow were included in the mix and match?

Sandy - great ad photo...I'd pass on whatever is cooked in that oven on the right side, though. :-)

Other colors:

Petal Pink, Woodtone Brown, Cadet Blue

Stuffed clams on the baking sheet on the right in the pic.

I thought those were baked acorn squash, but truth be told, that lower shelf is packed pretty close together and pretty close to the sides of the oven for proper heat circulation.

Acorn squash were halved and the seeds removed before being baked for the first half of the baking time facing down on the baking pan, then turned over, dabbed with butter then sprinkled with salt, pepper and some cinnamon. Microwaves really shorten the preparation time for these and baked potatoes, which were usually prepared along with meatloaf on cool fall evenings when it felt good to have the oven on.

Tom:

Now that you say squash I see you're right. The one in the back looked like the turned up edge of a clam shell to me. If so they would be some honking big clams wouldnt they!

Sandy

Not sure, as it doesn't show up in either my '57 or '58 catalog. I had figured that it was replaced with the 30" models when GE introduced the Straight-Line styling.

I could be wrong.

Lawrence:

My understanding is that it appeared in the same '57 catalog that introduced the Straight-Line Design Liberator and Stratoliner, plus the Spacemaker 30.

I wonder if they went into the '57 model year with it, then decided to drop it partway through? That happens.

Sandy,

True, they could have continued to offer it for a period of time; maybe using up stock as GE has been known to do?

I've always thought the 30" replaced the 24", but after re-thinking and based on what you've seen I wonder if the true replacement for the 24" was the Mark 27, which came along a few years later.
