Sounds like there may be an issue with the washer timer. Here's the ad:

Vintage Whirlpool Washer and Dryer
$150 for both obo
Both work very well
Interesting dials.
Could use a little clean up.
Washer dial needs to be fixed. It spins so you can't choose which wash cycle you want to use.
Dryer works very well.

Hmmm.... Might just be that the timer knob is broken.  If anyone here is pursuing this set, I just happen to have a timer and dial for a washer like this, if needed.

Loose Washer Timer Dial

Its the white nylon hub that mounts the timer dial that breaks , I still have a bag of them if anyone gets the washer.
