We are in need of a new wall oven. Our pipe to the icemaker sprung a leak (think slow leak) that got under our tile. The tile sits over vinyl and the subfloor is particale board. Insurance is paying for the removal of the tile and subfloor. We have custom built cabinets that have to be removed and can't be salvaged. We have a 24 inch GM Frigidaire single wall oven in coppertone. The house was built in 1971. We have replaced all the kitchen other than the oven as we were waiting on the oven to go out before doing a remodel. What new brand of wall oven should we look at. My wife would like a double oven (electric) but we could use a single wall oven. Any comments will be appreciated.

I have had a GE double electric oven, which was awesome. I believe it was a 2003-04 model. I now have a Frigidaire/Electrolux Pro Series convection oven which I think I love even more. It is single oven, which is fine. I can bake 3 sheets of cookies at one time and they all come out the same. The only problem I have with it is that it is not very deep. I cannot put a Take & Bake pizza in there without it touching the front glass. We don't eat those pizzas that often so it's not really a big deal to me.
Also, look for an oven with an actual keypad instead of arrows for up and down temps. It's a pain to have to hit the up arrow to get the oven to go from it's standard 350 (which is the default temp) up to 450. It only goes up by 5 degrees at a time. It's not a big concern but if you can get one with the keypad, it would be better.

Mine is similar to the link provided. I do not have the keypad though and mine is 3 years old.

Why are wall ovens so much more expensive than stand alone ranges even when the features are both are the same. The wall oven in the link is listed at $1159. I have a black smoothtop Kenmore range, with the oven having all the same features as listed for the Frigidaire wall oven and yet my range was less than $1,000. I am in Canada so I am sure in the states it would be even less. The only difference I can see between my stove and the wall oven is that it has the stainless steel exterior.

Can't agree more Heather on those ovens with the countdown/countup temp control and timers, what a pain. Sadly it's a trend most models are switching to no doubt to save a few sheckles in production costs. The keypad a la microwave setup is much much easier and convenient.

Wall oven or Stand Alone

Since we have to have a total tear out of the kitchen due to the water damage we might be able to go with a stand alone. I looked today at our local Sears and they have the model in the link on closeout for 870.00 marked down from 1800.00. This is a small local Sears store and floor model. This is less than a 27 or 30 inch single wall oven.

Remember:

A separate cooktop and oven may have had two 30a lines.
A one-piece standard-sized cooker may require a 40a or 50a line. This would therefore require heavier duty wiring and probably a new circuit.

The two old 220v lines may be made into four 20a 120v lines for use, say, as countertop ("workbench"=> UK) outlets. Just be sure to downsize the four exisitng circuit breakers to the requisite 20a.

:-)

Thanks Steve Toggleswitch

We have the 50 amp to the dryer and also have extra space for another. It is about a 15 foot run from the breaker box in utility to the wall. Also can use extra outlets along that wall. We are waiting on insurance company now on what they will pay so will know what we have to pay.

Kitchen

Did have cabinet shop come out yesterday and measure cabinets. After work went to see different woods and styles and stains. Going to remove the snack bar area and extend another 2 cabinets to replace. If we go with the stand alone will add 3 more base cabinets and move the wall oven cabinet down to make more of a galley type kitchen. Will still leave lots of room in eatin area. Have one of the older homes that has the kitchen, eatin area and family room open concept. I'll take pictures and post if is anyone wants to see the before, during and after.

Waiting

Still waiting on insurance to accept the bids. Have purchased 20 chicken boxes to put all the kitchen cabinet things in as they are easy to stack and hold up to 70 pounds. Looks like it will take much longer than we want.

I'd go with vintage

I'd recommend a 24-inch vintage GE wall oven with rotisserie. I've found quite a few on ebay. Nothing beats that built-in meat thermometer or that awesome rotisserie. I've seen some vintage Frigidaire ovens as well. As far as new goes, I'd look at Gaggenau or at Miele but there costly. My Jenn Air is terrific but I have no idea what Whirlpool has done to them.

Long day of looking

With 41 years of marriage almost down the drain (just joking) we have decided (I hope) on light honey oak cabinets, a floor tile (have 4 different tiles laid out on the floor), and a wilsonart granite type surface. At this point we are keeping our 36" ceramic cook top and getting the Frigidaire 27" oven. Link below. We will sleep on it tonight. My wife, daughters and daughters-in-laws and my mother will discuss more tomorrow while we have our Super Bowl party. The girls made a day of it and called and sent pictures all day today.

Tear out of Kitchen

They will start tearing out the cabinets and all one day next week. We started packing the kitchen last night.

What a mess.

oh boy. Glad you decided.

Of course a full sized 30" range and a nice fan-convection wall oven may cost the same as a cooktop and a wall oven, but since you already have the cooktop............

That would have gotten you two ovens with a large one, convecton and an eye-level wall oven........

Much luck with your renovations and more pics, if you please.

Oven

Went one last time to look at ovens. Went to Metro Builders Supply to see the actual one I posted. It was nice but found this Maytag that was cheaper and much better built. It is the MEW6530DDW still built as a Maytag. We can buy it for $649.00. We were shocked to say the least had looked at them online and at Lowes and Sears they are over 1K there. I took pictures this morning while we were unloading cabinets and my wife had a fit saying you had better not post those with my counter tops looking like this. I will take some when we have all the counters clean and before the tear out.

With no glass in the door, how do they keep the "atomic energy" waves from leaking out?
Isn't the glass on Microwave doors treated with something to prevent this?

We have a Litton 412 Microwave sitting in our garage. In great shape, we bought it in 1976. It's missing it's glass plate though.
So we haven't used it. The glass plate exploded one time when Karen popped some popcorn directly on the glass rather than using a plate.
